Roughnecks Complete Day 1 at Midwest Classic

Four Roughnecks are still alive as the first day of the 2015 Midwest Classic came to an end on Dec. 19 in Indianapolis, Ind.

Junior Nick Goebel led the Roughnecks on day one as he reached the semifinals of the 149-pound weight bracket with a perfect 3-0 record. Goebel, the top-ranked wrestler in the nation at 149, will face Coker's Jordon Tague in the semis tomorrow.

In addition, sophomore Ryan Skonieczny, junior Joey White and junior Nic Skonieczny are all competing in the consolation bracket.

Ryan Skonieczny finished the first day of competition with a 3-1 record at 141. Skonieczny will face Pitt-Johnstown's Sam Hanau tomorrow.

White also went 3-1 on the day. The fifth-ranked wrestler in the nation in the 157-pound weight class will face North Carolina-Pembroke's Hayden Fry tomorrow.  

Nic Skonieczny, who is ranked sixth nationally at 165, completed Saturday with a 4-1 record. Sean Black of Campbellsville is up next for the junior.

In addition, red-shirt freshman Alonzo Turner and sophomore Dalton Ishmal ended day one with 3-2 records. Turner wrestled in the 174-pound weight class while Ishmal competed at 197.

Freshman Devin Rogers (133) went 1-2, junior Gerald Beck was 1-2 (285) and sophomore Randy Caris (184) finished the day with a 0-2 mark.

The event will conclude tomorrow.
