Oilers Compete on First Day of Midwest Classic

Indianapolis, IN - The University of Findlay wrestling team traveled to Indianapolis for the first of two days of the 38th Annual Midwest Classic hosted by the University of Indianapolis. After the Saturday, Dec. 17 performance, the Roughnecks are in 16th of 38 teams. Of those 38 teams, 14 are currently ranked as top-25 teams in the country.

Sophomore Josh Wimer, currently ranked third in the nation at 141 pounds, went 3-1 on the day including pins in his first two bouts and a decisive 8-2 decision in consolation round four. His only loss came in a close 6-4 match in the championship quarterfinal. Wimer finishes in eighth place.

Fellow sophomore Alonzo Turner wrestled at 165 pounds and also finished the day with a 3-1 record and an eighth place finish. The seventh-ranked wreslter in the country at his weight, Turner won a pair of 3-1 decisions to open his tournament. He then lost by sudden victory (6-4) in the championship quarterfinal to Northern State's Sean Havlovic, #5 in the country. Turner came back with a 5-1 win in the consolation round four.

Another eighth place finish came from senior Bradley Metz at 174 pounds. Metz, ranked ninth in the country, won his first bout by major decision (14-1) but lost in the second round. He then won three straight matches, the final two of which were major decision victories, to finish with a 4-1 record.
