Metz Takes Third | Team 13th at Midwest Classic

Indianapolis, IN - The University of Findlay wrestling team had three wrestlers in action on the second day of the 38th Annual Midwest Classic on Sunday, Dec. 18. After competition concluded, the Roughnecks found themselves in 13th place out of 38 teams with 54.5 points scored. The field included 14 top-25 NCAA Division II teams and Findlay finished ahead of four of those teams.

 The Roughnecks' best finish was turned in by senior Bradley Metz at 174 pounds. Metz, who went 4-1 on the first day of the Classic, won all three of his matches on Sunday to finished the tournament as the consolation champion with a 7-1 record for the tournament. Metz, ranked ninth in the nation at his weight class, now has an 11-2 record in the 2016-17 season. 

Metz' route to the consolation title ran through some stiff competition. He won his first match on Sunday by fall (2:59) and was then pitted against John Blankenship from Pitt-Johnstown, ranked eighth in the nation. Metz won that bout with a 2-1 decision to reach the consolation final. In that battle, Findlay's senior had to defeat the nation's third-ranked wrestler, Huston Evans of Newberry College. Metz won the match 2-0 to claim third place and earn the Roughnecks 18.50 points in the team standings.

Sophomores Josh Wimer and Alonzo Turner each turned in sixth place finishes for Findlay, each earning the team 9.00 points.

Wimer, ranked third in the nation at 141 pounds, went 3-1 on the first day and won his first Sunday match, a 9-3 decision over Jordan Roths of Upper Iowa, ranked ninth in the country. He then lost to #2 in the nation, Nick Crume of Indianapolis and then was forced to take a medical forfeit in the fifth place match.

At 165 pounds, Turner also won his first match on Sunday, a 5-3 decision over Brandon Supernaw of Western St. Colorado. He then lost in a tie-breaker in the consolation semifinals and fell 4-2 to Colbey Vance of Upper Iowa, #11 in the nation. 

The Roughnecks are off the mats until Jan. 5-6 when they travel to Fort Wayne, Ind. for the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) National Duals.
