Oilers Place 13th at National Championship

Derrick Vicars captured his second career individual title with a heave of 62'10 in the shot put as the Oilers completed the 2012 NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field National Championship on Saturday, May 26 in Pueblo, Colo.

Vicars, who won a national title in the discus during the 2010 campaign, has had a fantastic year for the Oilers and was named the Midwest Region Field Athlete of the Year as well as being named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Indoor and Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year.

John Guagenti finished third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 46.62 to earn All-American honors while Taylor Miller, Glen Forsythe and Cody Crockett also earned All-American honors in their respective events.

Miller took fourth in the shot put with a toss of 59'10.25, Forsythe was sixth in the triple jump with a school record tying mark of 50'05.25 while Crockett placed eighth in the javelin with a school record breaking heave of 211'03.

Darren Bass added a 12th place finish in the shot put at 54'01.25 as the men's squad finished in a tie for seventh place with 32 points, tying rival Ashland University for the top score among GLIAC member schools.

On the women's side, Raven Clay finished as the runner-up in the 100-meter hurdles after crossing the finish line in 13.06 to earn All-American honors for the Oilers.

Jessica Rowland added an 18th place finish in the shot put at 45'02.25 as the Oilers placed 13th with 16 points at the event.
