Oilers Will be Well Represented at Olympic Trials
The University of Findlay men's and women's track teams will be well represented at the 2012 Olympic Trials as past and present athletes will be competing in the event, which is slated to take place June 21-25 and June 28-July 1 in Eugene, Ore.
Jessica Rowland will compete in the hammer throw on Thursday and will be followed by Raven Clay, who will run in the 100-meter hurdles on Friday.
Derrick Vicars will also take part in the event as he will throw the shot put on Saturday.
Rowland was an All-American in the hammer throw during both the outdoor season for Findlay, finishing as the runner-up in the spring. She was also an All-American in the shot put during the indoor season.
Clay captured a national championship in the 60-meter hurdles during the indoor season and was the runner-up in the 100-meter hurdles during the outdoor campaign.
The Detroit, Mich., native was also tabbed both the indoor and outdoor Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Athlete of the Year during her senior season.
Vicars won a national championship in the shot put during the outdoor season for the Oilers and earned All-American honors in the event during the winter. He was also the runner-up in the weight throw at the indoor championship.
The Genoa, Ohio native earned Midwest Region Field Athlete of the Year honors during the outdoor campaign this season and earned GLIAC Field Athlete of the Year honors for the indoor and outdoor seasons.
In addition, former standout Stephanie Charnigo (2007-10) will look to qualify for the Olympics in the 800-meter run as well as the 1500-meter run.
Charnigo, a three-time All-American in the event during her tenure with Findlay, has been training with New Jersey/New York Track Club in preparation for the trials.
Also, UF volunteer track coach John Bowman will throw the discus on Saturday.
The trials will be broadcast on NBC and NBC Sports Network.
