Findlay Competes on Day 2 of GLIAC Championships
The University of Findlay men's and women's track and field teams participated on Day 2 of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship meet in Geneva, OH on Thursday, May 1st. The day consisted mostly of preliminary races that will conclude tomorrow, Friday, May 2nd, but there were some finals completed.
Men
Finals
Freshman Alexander Zolotoglavy took home the GLIAC championship in the long jump with his jump that distanced 7.37m (24'02.25"). The jump met the NCAA provisional in the event. Junior Demorrio Leggett also placed in the event as he took eighth with his jump of 6.64m (21'09.50")
Junior Jacob Miller earned points with his eighth place finish in the decathlon. He totaled 5737 points.
Findlay received points from a pair of athletes in the shot put as freshman Ben Hahler took sixth and senior Marcus Vicars took seventh. Their throws distanced 16.39m (53'09.25") and 15.97 (52'04.75"), respectively.
Prelims
Junior Dillon Webster qualified with the top time in the 800 meter run as he finished the race in 1:49.90. The time is four-tenths of a second behind the NCAA automatic qualifier.
Senior Justin Eilerman qualified for the finals in the 1500 meter run as he finished in 10th place with a time of 3:54.19.
Sophomore Kyle Smithey took eighth, the final qualifying spot, in the 400 meter hurdles with his time of 54.90.
With eight events scored, the men find themselves in fifth in the team standings with 27 points.
Women
Finals
Junior Pam Showman took second place in the heptathlon with 4862 points. That total qualifies for an NCAA provisional. Also in the event was sophomore Lydia Guagenti, who took fourth with 4083 points. Guagenti also competed in the javelin throw and took seventh with a throw that measured 35.88m (117'08"). Guagenti's performance in the javelin portion of the heptathlon, where her throw measured 37.55 (123'02"), set a new GLIAC record for the event.
Junior Kendra Averesch earned team points as she finished in third place in the shot put with a throw of 15.39m (50'06.00").
Freshman Erica King took seventh place in the hammer throw with her throw of 52.99m (173'10").
Sophomore Erica Bettac scored a point for Findlay with her eighth place finish in the 3000 meter steeplechase. Her time was 11:08.79.
Prelims
Sophomore Samantha Grippe qualified for the finals with the fastest time of the day in the 800 meter run. Her time was 2:14.00, the exact time needed to meet the NCAA provisional in the event.
The Oilers placed two finalists in the 400 meter dash as freshman Adrianna Powell-Lawrence took fourth and junior Shelby Stump finished seventh in the preliminaries. Their times were 57.85 and 57.93, respectively.
Two more finalists came from the 100 meter hurdles as sophomore Maud Sanmiquel finished with the seventh fastest time and Showman qualified with the eighth fastest time. Their times were 14.74 and 14.78, respectively. Sanmiquel also qualified in the 400 meter hurdles with her fourth fastest time of 1:01.94.
The 4x100 relay team of sophomore Taylor Ackerman, freshman Kadesha Roberts, senior Emily Caudill, and Powell-Lawrence finished with the sixth fastest time of the day, 48.91, qualifying the group for tomorrow's finals.
With eight events scored, the women find themselves in fourth in the team standings with 24 points.
