Oilers Drop 2 In Colorado

The women's volleyball team lost their first two contests of the season while competing in the 2011 Oredigger Volleyball Classic.

The Oilers opened the season against 11th ranked Metro State University with scores of 14-25, 22-25, 19-25.

Against Metro State University, who features the RMAC offensive and defensive preseason players of the year, the Oilers started slowly in set one with a 7-1 run against them and never got their feet back underneath them for the remainder of the set. In set two the Oilers battled the Roadrunners to 21-21 before finally losing 22-25. Set three was very similar with the Oilers ending the set with a score of 19-25.

The Oilers were paced by senior setter Jess Von Ins with 25 assists, 6 kills, and 6 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Mackenzie Vorst led the team in kills with 8. Junior middle blocker Andrea Holthaus led the team with a .375 hitting percentage. Also Sophomore libero Jacqui Endre led the team in digs with 10. "In sets two and three, we showed that we could compete with some of the best division two teams in the nation." said Head Coach Wick Colchagoff.

In the second match of the day the Oilers lost to the host team the Orediggers of the Colorado School of Mines with scores of 18-25, 26-28, and 16-25.

The Oilers again were very competitive all the way up to the final points of each set. Von Ins again led the team in assists with 23, while chipping with 5 kills, 4 digs and 4 blocks. Sophomore Middle Hitter Danielle Taflinger was a force at the net with 6 kills and 6 blocks. Vorst had 9 kills leading the team again. Junior Maggie Naayers contributed with 5 kills, a .364 hitting percentage and 2 blocks. "Today we played \very well in many aspects of the game. We must learn how to close out sets when we have a chance" stated Colchagoff. "I am looking forward to seeing how we respond tomorrow."

The Oilers return to action tomorrow in Golden, Colorado with matches at 2:00 PM MDT against Mesa State University and at 5:30 PM MDT against Fort Lewis University.
