Findlay Uses Breakout Match by Hannah Tong to Defeat Wayne State
The University of Findlay volleyball team made the mid-week trip to Detroit, Mich. to face the Warriors of Wayne State University and came away with the 3-1 (25-21, 22-25, 25-17, 24-21) victory. The win moves the Oilers to 17-9 overall and 8-6 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
The Findlay offense was powered by freshman Hannah Tong, who smashed 21 kills on 37 attacks (.459 hitting percentage). The outside hitter also played well defensively as she picked up four digs.
Aiding the attack were two seniors who have consistently guided the Oilers all season, Danielle Taflinger and Mackenzie Vorst. They both collected 11 kills. Taflinger increased her GLIAC-leading kill percentage by hitting .455 in the match. She also led the defense at the net as she amassed two blocks.
Junior setter Amanda Calhoun was the player that kept the offense flowing smoothly as she picked up 46 assists and seven digs.
With the injury to sophomore Julie Lyons, freshman Shannon Ebert was inserted into the lineup and has proven that there is great depth on the Oilers roster. The middle blocker/right side hitter added six kills and a block to her ever-improving resume.
Leading the defense for Findlay was senior Brittany Hall, who has solidified her spot as the Oilers libero. The senior had 21 digs in the victory.
Also playing well defensively was senior Jacqui Endre and sophomore Becca Shoemaker, who gathered five and seven digs, respectively.
Findlay will be back on the court this Friday as they travel to North Canton, Ohio to battle Walsh University in a GLIAC match set to begin at 7pm.
