Volleyball to Host Malone in GLIAC Tourney

The University of Findlay volleyball team will be at home on Wednesday, Nov. 12 to host Malone University in the quarterfinals of the 2014 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament. The match is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. in Croy Gymnasium.

Earlier this Season

The Oilers came away with a 3-2 win over Malone on Nov. 1 in Croy Gymnasium behind a school record 31 kills from sophomore Hannah Tong.

Freshman Erika Roach and junior Julie Lyons both played well offensively as they picked up 11 and eight kills, respectively.

The Oilers

The Oilers have won 11 straight matches and are 22-6 on the year. They captured their first GLIAC South Division title since 2003 and earned the three-seed in the 2014 GLIAC Tournament.

Sophomore Hannah Tong has led the Oilers thus far and leads the GLIAC in kills with 372 this season. She ranks second in the GLIAC with 3.58 kills per set and has also recorded 56 blocks during the 2014 campaign.

Senior Amanda Calhoun has had a great season for Findlay as well. She is currently the GLIAC-leader in assists (1,046) and aces (59). She has also registered 186 digs, 68 kills and 55 blocks from her setter position.

Red-shirt freshman Nickyla Garverick leads the GLIAC in blocks with 130 and has also accumulated 249 kills.  Her .301 hitting percentage is the fourth best mark in the league.

The Oilers also have a number of players who have recorded over 150 kills on the year as junior Andrea Roach (187), freshman Erika Roach (160) and junior Julie Lyons (156) have topped that plateau.  Lyons has also been the Oilers second best blocker at the net with 86 total blocks during the 2014 season.

Junior Becca Shoemaker has paced the defense and leads the team with 403 digs. Freshman Madelyn McCabe (168) and senior Samantha Granger (158) have also been stout on the defensive side of the net.

Malone

The Pioneers are 15-14 on the year and are the sixth-seed in the 2014 GLIAC Tournament.

Malone has a balanced offensive attack with three players over 200 kills. Taylor Slauterbeck (242), Anna Hays (233) and Elizabeth Maczuzak (207) have all reached the 200-kill plateua this season.

Sarah Brent and Shelbi Meek are closing in on doing the same as they have 197 and 193 kills, respectively.

Katie Hasebein leads the defense with 579 digs.
