Tong, Garverick, Colchagoff Honored by GLIAC
Sophomore outside hitter Hannah Tong, red-shirt freshman Nickyla Garverick and head coach Wick Colchagoff highlighted the 2014 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) awards for volleyball as the league office unveiled their annual all-conference teams on Nov. 15.
Tong was tabbed the GLIAC Attacker of the Year, Garverick was voted the Freshman of the Year and the Blocker of the Year while Colchagoff earned Coach of the Year accolades.
Tong, who was also selected as a first team all-conference pick, leads the GLIAC in kills with 385 and ranks second in the conference with 3.60 kills per set. She was named the GLIAC South Division Player of the Week three times during the season and earned national player of the week honors on Nov. 4. She had a season-high 31 kills against Malone on Nov. 1, the highest single match total in the GLIAC this year. The Carey, Ohio native has also added 58 blocks and has hit .246 on the year.
Garverick, who earned first team all-conference honors as well, leads the GLIAC with 133 blocks, which is the eighth best total in the nation. Her 1.22 blocks per set is the second highest average in the GLIAC and ranks ninth nationally. The Crestline, Ohio native is also ranked third in the GLIAC in hitting percentage at .301 and has accumulated 260 kills.
Colchagoff led the Oilers to their first GLIAC South Division title since the 2003 season. It was his fifth overall title in his 17 years on the sidelines at UF. Colchagoff's 2014 team leads the GLIAC in kills (1,327), hitting percentage (.224), assists (1,239), aces (213) and blocks (260).
In addition, senior setter Amanda Calhoun was voted second team all-conference while junior right side hitter Andrea Roach earned honorable mention all-league status.
Calhoun leads the GLIAC in assists (1,084) and aces (62). She has also recorded 189 digs, 71 kills and 55 blocks on the season.
Roach has accumulated 194 kills while hitting .254. She has also totaled 47 blocks on the year.
