Tong, Garverick Earn All-American Honors

2014 AVCA All-American Teams

Sophomore Hannah Tong and red-shirt freshman Nickyla Garverick of the Oilers volleyball team were named honorable mention All-American by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) on Dec. 3. Both players were first team all-region picks by the AVCA as well.

Tong, who was the 2014 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Attacker of the Year, led the Oilers with 390 kills. She averaged 3.55 kills per set and also contributed 58 blocks and 50 digs.  The Carey, Ohio native also picked up first team all-conference honors this season and was tabbed second team all-region by Daktronics.

Garverick, who the 2014 GLIAC Blocker and Freshman of the Year, recorded 266 kills and a team-high 135 blocks for the Oilers. She also hit .302 on the season and added 19 digs.  The Crestline, Ohio native also earned first team all-conference accolades and was a second team all-region pick by Daktronics.

Findlay has now had an honorable mention All-American in each of the past three years. Former standout Danielle Taflinger earned the award in 2012 and 2013 for the Oilers as well.

The Oilers finished the season as the GLIAC South Division champions, their first divisional title since 2003. They ended the year with a 23-7 record and advanced to the semifinals of the GLIAC Tournament for only the second time in school history.
