Oilers to Host NMU in GLIAC Quarter-Final

The Oilers will host the Northern Michigan Wildcats for the first round of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament. The game is to be played in Croy Gymnasium on Wednesday, November 18 and will begin at 7pm.

Findlay

The Oilers are 23-7 on the year with a 15-3 mark in GLIAC contests. They have won eight of their last nine matches, including a 3-1 win over 6th-ranked Wheeling Jesuit on Nov. 11.

With the Nov. 14 win over Ashland, the Oilers have claimed back-to-back South Division titles, the first time they have done so since their stretch from 2001-2003 where they won three in a row. Findlay enters the tournament as the second seed.

Junior Hannah Tong, who was recently named GLIAC Player of the Week for the fifth time in her career, is leading the Oilers attack as she has collected 429 kills at 3.94 kills per set, both marks are second best in the GLIAC. In her last match against Ashland, Tong became just the ninth player in Findlay history to record 1,000 kills in a career. She now sits at 1,003.

Senior Julie Lyons has contributed 234 kills while hitting a GLIAC leading .409. That percentage is good for ninth best in the country. She has also recorded 84 blocks. Her 232 career block assists are good for eighth all-time at UF.

Freshman Amanda Winner has racked up 353 kills, including 57 in her last three matches, and 184 digs while sophomore Nickyla Garverick has produced 269 kills with a hitting percentage of .388 (second in the GLIAC) and a team-high 89 blocks.

Senior Andrea Roach has 165 kills while hitting .341. That mark is third in the GLIAC behind Lyons and Garverick. Roach also has 38 blocks.

Freshman Hailee Olson leads the GLIAC, by more than 200, with 1,327 assists and 12.06 assists per set. She also has 137 digs, 50 kills and 43 blocks. Her assists per set are good for fifth best in the country while her total assists place her in third. She now sits in seventh at UF for assists in a season behind Kelly Byrnes' 2005 season where she totaled 1,420 assists. Olson also has 36 service aces.

Senior Becca Shoemaker has led the defense with 412 digs. She has 1,339 career digs good for third all-time at UF, needing 11 digs to move into second all-time, passing 2006 graduate and assistant coach, Ann Coger (née Dzierwa). Shoemaker has played in 453 sets in her career, good for eighth all-time. 

Freshman Kara Scherger and sophomore Madelyn McCabe have 230 and 168 digs, respectively. McCabe leads the team with 38 service aces.

The Oilers, as a team, lead the GLIAC in kills (1,554), kills per set (14.13), hitting percentage (.284), assists (1,465), assists per set (13.32), service aces (191), service aces per set (1.74), points (1,942), and points per set (17.7). Their hitting percentage is good for sixth best in the country.

Northern Michigan

The Wildcats enter this GLIAC tournament contest sporting a 21-9 record overall with a 10-8 mark in conference play. They have won five of their last six matches and enter the tournament as the seventh seed.

Sophomore Madison Whitehead is leading the NMU attack with 336 kills at a rate of 2.97 per set while sophomore Kayla Chosa and senior Lisa Studnicka have amassed 310 and 306 kills, respectively. The Wildcats are second in the GLIAC behind Findlay in team kills with 1,500. Studnicka is second on the team in digs with 320 and leads NMU with 46 service aces, which is fourth best in the GLIAC.

Sophomore Jami Hogeboom leads her team with 1,076 assists, good for fifth in the GLIAC. She also has 15 aces.

Leading the team in digs is senior Alex Berger who has collected 560 in that category. That number is second best in the conference.
