Oilers Advance to Semifinals of GLIAC Tourney

The University of Findlay volleyball team captured a 3-1 (22-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-23) win over Northern Michigan University in the first round of the 2015 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Tournament, which was hosted by the Oilers in Croy Gymnasium on Nov. 18.

The Oilers lost the first set of the match by a 25-22 margin, but regrouped to win the next three. As a team, Findlay hit .349 and held the Wildcats to a .289 hitting percentage.

Junior Hannah Tong hammered out a match-high 20 kills, hitting .545 in the win. The Carey, Ohio native also chipped in defensively with three blocks.

Freshman Amanda Winner had 16 kills and hit .343 while sophomore Nickyla Garverick pounded out nine kills with a .421 hitting percentage.

Senior Julie Lyons added seven kills while freshman Hailee Olson had 43 assists.

Senior Becca Shoemaker paced the defense with 17 digs while freshman Kara Scherger recorded 11.

The Oilers will now head to Big Rapids, Mich. to face Hillsdale College in the semifinals of the GLIAC Tournament. The match will be played on Saturday at 5:30 p.m.
