Findlay Gets NCAA Tournament Win

Big Rapids, MI – On Thursday, December 3rd, the University of Findlay volleyball team took on the Hillsdale College Chargers for the fourth time this season; this time, in a win-or-go-home situation as they met in the first round of NCAA tournament action. The Oilers won 3-1 (28-26, 15-25, 25-13, 25-17), improving their record to 26-8 on the season.

After winning a tight first set, the Oilers dropped the second, but dominated the remainder of the game and were able to secure the 3-1 victory.

Junior Hannah Tong led the way as she was able to smash 20 kills while hitting .250. Senior Julie Lyons played the way she has all season as she sliced up the Chargers defense for 12 kills at a stellar .579 hitting percentage. Freshman Amanda Winner and sophomore Nickyla Garverick chipped in 12 and 9 kills, respectively. Garverick hit .438 and had five blocks in the win.

Recently named AVCA Midwest Region Freshman of the Year, Hailee Olson continued playing well as the Oilers setter as she was able to pick up 43 assists.

Senior Becca Shoemaker led the defense with her 20 digs while sophomore Megan Wendel was second on the team with eight.

With the win, the Oilers advance to take on the top-seeded Ferris State in a match slated to begin at 5:00pm.
