The 8th-ranked Oilers will face 7th-ranked Bellarmine University in the second round of the 2019 NCAA Division II Tournament. The contest will tip at 6:00 p.m. (EST) on March 17 in Romeoville, Ill.

Series Information

The Oilers hold a 4-3 advantage in the all-time series against Bellarmine dating back to the 2001-02 campaign when Findlay came away with a 93-85 win.

The two programs last met in the second round of the 2018 NCAA Division II National Tournament. Findlay came away with a 74-73 victory in that contest.

The Oilers shot 54.7 percent (29-of-53) from the floor and converted 10-of-22 (45.5%) of their attempts from three point land. Bellarmine meanwhile made 59.6 percent (31-of-52) from the field and 53.8 percent (7-of-13) from behind the three point line.

Taren Sullivan paced the Oilers with 22 points on 9-of-14 shooting. He also made 4-of-6 tries from three point range and added four boards in the game.

Martyce Kimbrough had 20 points, six assists and five rebounds. He also made 5-of-9 attempts from three point range in the victory.

Alex White reached double figures with 14 points and also added three blocked shots while Austin Gardner and Elijah Kahlig finished with eight and seven points, respectively.

#8 Findlay

The Oilers are 28-4 on the season and are coming off of a 71-66 win over Drury in the opening round of the tournament. They have been led by senior Alex White, who was named the Midwest Region and Great Midwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year. White is averaging 18.5 points, 8.6 rebounds, and 1.8 blocks per game this season.

Junior Aaron Overhiser is averaging 13.4 points and 6.1 rebounds per contest while senior Trey Smith is averaging 11.9 points and has made a team-high 74 three pointers.

Sophomore Anthony Masterlasco is averaging 10.7 points while sophomore Chazz George (7.8), sophomore Tommy Schmock (7.3) and freshman Ethan Linder (7.0) are all solid contributors. Schmock also leads the team with 6.1 assists per game to go along with 4.0 rebounds per contest.

#7 Bellarmine

The 7th-ranked Knights are 27-4 on the season and are coming off of an 81-61 win over Walsh in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Tournament.

Adam Eberhard leads the team and is averaging 17.3 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game.

Chivarsky Corbett is averaging 12.2 points and 6.9 rebounds per contest while Ben Weyer is averaging 11.7 points and 4.7 boards per outing.

Alex Cook is also scoring in double figures on a nightly basis and is averaging 10.1 points and 4.1 rebounds per game.

The Oilers have appeared in 15 NCAA Division II National Tournaments since joining the DII ranks as a full member in 2000-01 and have recorded a 21-13 record in those games. They have appeared in the national tournament during the 2001-02, 2002-03, 2003-04, 2004-05, 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08, 2008-09, 2009-10, 2011-12, 2012-13, 2013-14, 2016-17, 2017-18, and 2018-19 seasons.  

The team reached the Elite 8 for the first time in school history during the 2004-05 campaign and advanced to the Sweet 16 during the 2007-08 season, 2016-17 campaign and again in 2017-18. They then used those experiences to win a NCAA Division II National Championship during the 2008-09 campaign, finishing the year with a perfect 36-0 record. They claimed the title with a 56-53 overtime win against Cal Poly Pomona on March 28, 2009 in Springfield, Mass. Their 36 wins as an undefeated national champion are the most in the history of NCAA Division II men's basketball.

An Elite Program

The Oilers have one of the best winning percentages in NCAA Division II competition since the year 2000, having won 471 games and lost only 114 for an overall winning percentage of .805.  During that timeframe, the Oilers reached the Elite 8 in 2005, appeared in the Sweet 16 in 2008, 2017 and again in 2018, and won the NCAA Division II National Championship in 2009 with a perfect 36-0 record.

The Oilers have also appeared in the national tournament 15 times since becoming eligible during the 2000-01 campaign.

Midwest Region Player of the Year

Senior forward Alex White was tabbed the 2019 Division 2 Conference Commissioners Association (D2CCA) Midwest Region Player of the Year for his performance during the 2018-19 season. White also earned first team all-region honors from the association.

The Best of the Bunch

Senior forward Alex White was named the 2019 Great Midwest Player of the Year after leading the Oilers to a 25-3 finish during the regular season. White ended the regular season with averages of 18.4 points and 8.8 rebounds per game. He also blocked 1.8 shots per contest and hit 55.1 percent of his field goal attempts during the regular season.

Coach of the Year

Head coach Charlie Ernst was named the 2019 Great Midwest Coach of the Year after leading the Oilers to the regular season title. He was also voted the coach of the year last season as well.
