Schmock Lifts Oilers to Win Over Storm
The University of Findlay men's basketball team came away with a 75-64 win over Lake Erie College on Jan. 2 in Niekamp Arena. The win pushes the Oilers record to 8-5 on the season with a 3-1 record in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC).
The Oilers found themselves down 61-57 with 4:38 to play before junior guard Tommy Schmock took over. Schmock buried a three pointer 18 seconds later and then came away with a steal and an assist to junior forward Anthony Masterlasco to give Findlay a 62-61 lead with just under four minutes to play.
The Storm would retake the lead several possessions later before Masterlasco scored to put Findlay up 65-64 with 2:52 remaining in the game. Schmock then connected on back-to-back three pointers to give Findlay a 71-64 advantage with 1:24 showing on the clock. He then came away with another steal that led to two free throws for freshman forward Nathan Bruns and assisted on a layup by Masterlasco down the stretch to give Findlay the victory.
The Oilers shot 45.9 percent (28-of-61) from the floor and drilled 7-of-19 (36.8%) three point attempts in the win. They also outrebounded the Storm 45-27 and blocked eight shots in the contest.
Schmock finished the game with a double-double, scoring 14 points to go along with 11 assists. He also grabbed four rebounds and recorded four steals in the win.
Senior forward Aaron Overhiser double-doubled as well, finishing with 14 points and a season-high 13 rebounds, while Bruns led all Findlay scorers with 15 points. He also added six rebounds, two steals, and two blocks.
Masterlasco finished the game with ten points and eight rebounds while sophomore guard Ethan Linder had ten points and four boards.
The Storm, who shot 37.3 percent (22-of-59) from the floor, were led by Gabe Kynard's game-high 27 points.
The Oilers will be back in action again on Jan. 9 when they host Cedarville University at 7:30 p.m. in Niekamp Arena.
