Oilers in Second Through 36 at G-MAC Championship | Westfall Leads
Lexington, Ky. – The University of Findlay men's golf team began their defense of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Golf Championship on Friday, April 19 in Lexington, Kentucky at the University of Kentucky's Big Blue Golf Club. Battling periods of steady rain and wind, the Oilers played the 6,896-yard course to a 36-hole score of 595 (+19), shooting a 296 (+8) in the morning round and ending the day with a 299 (+11) in the afternoon round. Their score of 595 has the Oilers in a tie for second, just two shots of the leader, Malone University, who fired a 593 (+17). In last year's G-MAC Championship, Findlay also had a score of 595 through 18 holes before shooting a 294 to secure the conference title.
Playing in his first conference championship, freshman Caleb Westfall opened up the day with a 73 (+1) in the morning and came back with six birdies in the afternoon round to shoot a 71 (-1). His 36-hole score of 144 (E) has the newcomer with a one-shot lead in the tournament with 18 holes to play. Westfall leads the field with nine birdies in the tournament thus far and also leads in par 5 scoring, shooting five-under on par 5s through 36 holes.
In a tie for seventh in the event is junior Luke Kelly who post scores of 72 (E) and 76 (+4) to finish with a 148 (+4) through 36 holes. An all-conference performer a season ago, Kelly was second in the field with 24 pars.
Freshman Tanner Grzegorczyk is in a tie for 18th with a 153 (+9) after shooting a 78 (+6) in the morning and besting that round with a 75 (+3) in the afternoon. The Glenshaw, Pa. native made eagle on the par 5 fifth hole, one of just three eagles on the day.
Senior Dylan DeWitt, runner-up in last year's G-MAC Championship, and junior Sam Griffith are in a tie for 23rd overall with scores of 154 (+10) through 36 holes. DeWitt shot a pair of 77s (+5) while Griffith shot a 74 (+2) in his first round and finished with an 80 (+8) in the afternoon session.
The final 18 holes will be played tomorrow with a conference champion to be crowned following the event.
