Oilers Win Overtime Thriller

Box Score

Painesville, OH – The University of Findlay men's soccer team defeated the Lake Erie College Storm in a 4-3 final on Saturday, October 14. The G-MAC win boosted the Oilers to 10-3 overall and 9-2 in conference play and dropped the Storm to a 4-10 overall record and 3-9 in Great Midwest play.

The Oilers took the lead early in the first half, scoring goals in the 11th and 14th minute of the match.

The first goal was scored by freshman Jack Atkinson on an assist from junior Josh Burton, and then Burton knocked one of his own to the back of the net to increase the Oilers lead to 2-0.

Scoring was not finished for the first period, as the Storm were able to fire two goals of their own to even the score leading into the halftime.

Lake Erie came out of the second half strong, taking the lead in the 56th minute of the matchup.

Burton would score again an unassisted goal in the 67th minute of the game to even the score to 3-3. Neither team was able to take the lead by the end of regulation, so the Storm and the Oilers would head to a sudden death period.

The overtime period was short lived, as Findlay struck the winning goal less than two minutes into the first sudden death period. The golden goal was scored from junior Jake van der Ven on an assist from senior Peyton Schroeder.

The Oiler out-shot the Storm 23 to 14, with 10 of the Findlay's shots being on goal. Senior Ben Richter received the decision in front of the net for the Oilers, recording four saves on the night.

Findlay will be back on the pitch this Thursday, October 19 when they take on Trevecca Nazarene at DeHaven Field in a match set to begin at 1:00 PM.
