Findlay Hits Six Home Runs in Tuesday Split in Florida

Winter Haven, Fla. – The University of Findlay softball team split a pair of games on Tuesday, March 3 in Winter Haven, Florida. The Oilers lost in the opener to the University of Mary by a score of 12-2 but clubbed their way to an 8-1 over Clarion University to wrap up the day.

Game 1 (L 12-2 vs Mary)

Tuesday's first game began well for Findlay as leadoff hitter Rebecca Harvey went deep to start the game, giving the Orange and Black a 1-0 lead through one inning of play.

However, on a day where the wind was blowing straight to the outfield, one run would not be nearly enough.

Mary scored seven unanswered runs by the middle of the third before Findlay got an RBI double off the bat of Gloria Corona to trim the lead to 7-2. But that was the last run the Oilers would score.

The game would end early by run rule as Mary took advantage of their ten hits, five of which were home runs.

Findlay finished the game with two runs on four hits and made three errors while Mary scored 12 runs on ten hits and made two errors.

Megan Fisher took the loss in the circle after throwing two innings and allowing seven runs, five earned, on five hits. She walked one and struck out one.

Harvey, Dylan Wiley, Corona, and Tori Budzinski were the only Oilers with hits.

Game 2 (W 8-1 vs Clarion)

Findlay's offense came alive in the second game of the day as they took on Clarion University which had lost 53 games in a row dating back to April of 2018.

The Oilers flexed their offensive muscle in the first inning as Caroline Turner and Savannah Harvey each went deep to put the Orange and Black ahead 4-0 through just on inning.

Caroline Turner wasted no time helping extend that lead as she hit her second homerun of the game in the second inning to make the score 6-0.

In the fourth, Devyn Zuro led off the inning with a solo shot to extend the lead to 7-0 and, after a home run by Clarion made the score 7-1, Madelyn Turner took her turn at a round tripper, sending a ball over the wall for her first bomb of the year.

Findlay finished with eight runs on eight hits, five of which left the yard.

Caragyn Yanek earned the win in the circle with a four-inning effort in which she allowed just one hit and no runs. She walked one and struck out five.

Caroline Turner finished with two hits, both of which were home runs, four RBI, and two runs scored. Savannah Harvey and Devyn Zuro each had two hits and one home run. Zuro also had a double.

The Oilers are back in action on Wednesday, March 4 when they will take on the College of Saint Rose at 10:15 am and will then play Wheeling University at 12:30 pm.
