Findlay Makes it Five Straight | Wins in Nashville
Nashville, Tennessee – For just the second time in the Jim Wiedie era, the University of Findlay women's basketball team has won five straight games, improving to 5-1 (2-0) to start the 2017-18 campaign. On Saturday, Dec. 2, the Oilers took down Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) foe Trevecca Nazarene University by a score of 60-45. Trevecca falls to 3-5 on the year with a 1-1 mark in conference play.
The Trojans kept the game close, trailing Findlay by just one point through the first quarter. However, the Oilers, which have won their previous four games by an average of 23 points, outscored the home team 16-6 in the second period to take a 32-21 lead into the locker rooms.
Findlay took at 14-point lead with 4:49 to play in the third quarter when a three pointer by Lynsey Englebrecht put the Orange and Black ahead at 41-27. Trevecca would respond with a 10-3 run and trailed by just six points heading into the fourth quarter, but that's all the closer the Trojans would come as Findlay outscored the Purple and White 16-8 in the final frame to extend their streak to five games.
The Oilers outshot the Trojans, making 50% of their tries from the floor (22-of-44) to just 21.8% for Trevecca (12-of-55). Findlay, which turned the ball over twice as often as Trevecca (22-to-11), dominated the home team on the boards 41-to-29 and controlled the game in the paint, collecting 20 points in the key to just eight for the Trojans.
Findlay was paced by the play of junior Anna Hintz who scored a game-high 17 points on 6-of-11 from the floor. She made 5-of-6 from the charity stripe and also snagged six boards in the win.
Senior Lynsey Englebrecht made it three straight games in double-figures, scoring 13 points on the strength of 4-of-5 from beyond the arc. One of the deadliest shooters in the country from deep, Englebrecht also contributed six rebounds and added a pair of assists.
Senior Haley Horstman and junior Elissa Ellerbrock each had five boards for Findlay. Horstman reached double-figures with ten points and led the team with three assists while Ellerbrock scored four and also had two assists.
The Oilers leading rebounder was junior Jenna Stegmaier who had eight boards. She also had eight points on 3-of-5 shooting.
The Trojans were led offensively by McKenzie Kilburn and Callie Hackett who each scored 13 points in a losing effort.
The G-MAC's first place team will return home next weekend, finally taking part in their home-opener on Thursday, Dec. 7 against Walsh. That game will tip-off at 8:00 pm.
