#25 Oilers Have Streak Snapped in Pepper Pike
Pepper Pike, Ohio – The University of Findlay women's basketball team had their 12-game winning streak snapped at the hands of the Ursuline Arrows on Thursday, Jan. 4 by a score of 80-73. With the loss, the Oilers, currently ranked no. 25 in the country, fall to 12-2 overall and drop to second place in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) with a league record of 9-1. The Arrows, which have won 29 of their previous 32 G-MAC games, improve to 11-3 overall and move into first place in the league with an 8-0 record.
The Oilers had not trailed at the half all season but found themselves trailing the Arrows 47-34 through 20 minutes of action on Thursday. An 8-0 run to close the third quarter pulled Findlay to within six points through three periods, but Ursuline hit 8-of-10 free throws in the final 2:12 of the game to hold on for the seven-point victory.
Findlay was paced offensively by junior Anna Hintz who scored 21 points, 13 of which came in the fourth quarter. She made 8-of-15 from the floor and 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. Hintz also tied for the team lead with seven rebounds. Junior Jenna Stegmaier also had seven boards to go along with three assists and a career-high 17 points. She shot 6-of-10 from the floor including hitting a pair of shots from deep.
Junior Christa Puthoff came off the bench and scored 13 points on 6-of-9 from the floor. She also grabbed five rebounds in 17 minutes of action. Junior Elissa Ellerbrock was the final double-digit scorer as she dropped ten points on 4-of-7 shooting. She made 2-of-3 from beyond the arc.
Senior Lynsey Englebrecht finished with seven points, three boards, and a career-best, eight assists.
The Arrows were led by Camryn Hill who made four shots from beyond the arc to help her reach 27 points for the game, but the standout performance of the night belonged to two-time G-MAC Player of the Year, Laney Lewis. Lewis finished the game with 25 points, 15 rebounds, and 11 assists to achieve her second triple-double of the season.
As a team, Findlay made 28-of-67 from the floor for 41.8%, their worst shooting percentage in a game this season. The no. 25 team in the country hit just 6-of-20 from deep and, despite turning the ball over only 11 times, forced just nine turnovers themselves.
The Arrows did not shoot much better as they made 28-of-61 for 45.9%. The teams broke even in rebounds (39-39), assists (19-19), and points off turnovers (12-12) while Findlay held a slight advantage on points in the paint (30-22).
Findlay will look to get back to their winning ways as they head to Painesville on Saturday, Jan. 6 to take on the Lake Erie Storm.
