Third Quarter Dominance Lifts Oilers to Victory Over Feisty Arrows

Box Score

Findlay, Ohio – The University of Findlay women's basketball team used a huge third quarter to earn the win on Saturday, Jan. 4 with a 96-78 victory over the Ursuline College Arrows in Croy Gymnasium. The win puts the Oilers over the .500 mark on the season at 8-7 overall and improves their standing in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, moving to 4-1 in the league. The Arrows fall to 5-10 on the season and 2-4 in conference action.

The Oilers stumbled out of the gate on Saturday as they fell behind a hot-shooting Ursuline quad through the first half of action. The Arrows hit six triples in the first 20 minutes of play and forced Findlay into eight turnovers in that stretch. By halftime, the Oilers trailed 46-41.

Coming out of the break, Findlay turned it on in all phases of the game to play some of their best basketball of the season.

The Oilers cranked up the pressure defensively, forcing six steals in the third frame, and shot 68 percent from the floor (13-of-19) including 67 percent from deep (4-of-6). Findlay turned the ball over just once in that quarter while forcing the Arrows, who had just six turnovers in the first half, into eight turnovers. That defensive pressure allowed Ursuline to take just ten shots in the quarter after taking 18 shots in each of the previous two.

With a 12-point lead going into the fourth quarter, Findlay stretched the lead to as much as 20 points and would finally be able to take a breath in a game that featured five ties and ten lead changes. The Oilers' 96 points would end up being the most in a game since they scored 100 against Ohio Dominican in the first round of the G-MAC Tournament in the 2017-18 season.

For the game, Findlay shot a season-high 56.5 percent from the floor, making 35-of-62 field goals. They also drained nine shots from deep, the second-most triples made in a game this season.

The Oilers held a 36-28 advantage on the boards and forced the Arrows into 16 turnovers while committing 14 of their own. Findlay's bigs, as they have done much of the season, dominated in the paint, scoring 44 points in the paint while allowing just 24.

Sophomore Sydney Kin played a big role in holding off the Arrows as she would finish the game with 24 points, 12 of which were scored in the fourth quarter. Kin shot 8-for-12 from the floor and hit 8-of-9 from the charity stripe in the win. She also grabbed five rebounds and had a steal.

Sophomore Bridget Landin also had a big game as she poured in 17 points on 6-of-9 from the floor. Landin was the team's leading rebounder with nine. She also had three steals and two assists.

Coming off the bench was freshman Rachel Cooke who put together her best game to-date, scoring a career-high 11 points on the strength of three shots from downtown. Cooke had five rebounds, three assists, and a steal. Also scoring in double-figures was senior Lauren Ruth who canned a pair of triples and would finish with ten points.

Junior Madison Stolly led the game with a career-high nine assists to go along with five points. Sophomore Amber Schweiger also had a new career-high in assists, finishing with eight in the game.

Findlay will take on Cedarville University this coming Thursday, Jan. 9 in Croy Gymnasium. That game will tip off at 5:30 pm.
