Oilers in Third at NCAA East Regional | Two Players in Top Ten

Owensboro, Ky. – The University of Findlay women's golf team opened up play at the NCAA Division II East Regional held at The Pearl Club in Owensboro, Kentucky on Monday, May 6. It is the ninth consecutive year that the Oilers have earned a berth in the regional. Ranked second in the region and 15th in the country entering the postseason, the Oilers are currently in third after posting a 303 (+15) on the first of three days of action. The top four teams in the event will book their tickets to the Division National Championship held in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida starting Wednesday, May 15.

Sophomore Kristina Kniesly paced the Oilers in the opening round, firing a 74 (+2). Her round included a pair of birdies, both of which came in the first three holes of her round as she made a four on the par-five second and made a two on the par-three third. Her score is sixth on the leaderboard.

One shot behind is junior Meredith Wipper who is currently tied for seventh in the tournament after posting a round-one score of 75 (+3). Wipper birdied the second hole and shot even par through the first nine holes.

In a tie for 18th on the leaderboard are senior Makenzie Torres and freshman Jill Schmitmeyer who each shot rounds of 77 (+5). Torres is tied for the tournament lead in Par 5 scoring at two-under and also had a tournament-best four birdies on the day. Schmitmeyer had just one birdie on the day, but her back-nine score of even par (36) was the best for the Oilers in Monday's round.

Rounding out the Oilers scoring is senior Samantha Hatter who is in a tie for 25th with a 78 (+6) through 18 holes.

The second round of the regional will be played tomorrow, May 6.
