Oilers in 12th After Day 1 at National Championship
The University of Findlay women's golf team completed the first day of the 2019 NCAA Division II National Championship on May 14 at the PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. The Oilers shot a 318 on day one and are currently in 12th place.
The par 73, 6,081-yard course proved to be difficult throughout the day, but the Oilers did rack up 11 birdies, the third-best total on Tuesday, and one eagle, courtesy of senior Makenzie Torres. Her eagle came on the par 5, 495-yard third hole.
Torres paced the Oilers and is tied for 28th with a 4-over par score of 77. Torres posted two birdies to go with her eagle and also had 11 pars during her round.
Sophomore Kristina Kniesly shot a 6-over par score of 79 and is tied for 40th after the first 18 holes of competition while freshman Jill Schmitmeyer and senior Samantha Hatter are tied for 57th with an 8-over par score of 81. Kniesly led the Oilers with 13 pars while Hatter posted a team-high four birdies. Schmitmeyer meanwhile had two birdies to go along with nine pars.
Junior Meredith Wipper also competed for Findlay and is in 83rd place with a 12-over par round of 85.
The Oilers will look to climb the leaderboard tomorrow. The top-8 after 54-holes of competition will continue in match play to crown the 2019 NCAA Division II National Champion. The Oilers are only six strokes shy of eighth place Grand Valley State, who shot a 312.
