Oilers Fall to Panthers 3-2 in Quarterfinals

The University of Findlay women's golf team saw their season come to a close in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Division II National Championship on May 17 at the PGA National in West Palm Beach, Fla. The Oilers were defeated 3-2 by Florida Tech in match play and finish the tournament in a tie for fifth place.

The Oilers two victories in match play came from senior Makenzie Torres and junior Meredith Wipper. Torres claimed a five-shot victory over Lauren Watson and finished the day with an 84. Wipper meanwhile scored a one-stroke victory against Noelle Beijer after being up by as many as five strokes in the match. Wipper posted a team-low 77 during her round to score the win.

Sophomore Kristina Kniesly fell by three strokes to Paola Ortiz despite shooting a 79. She quickly gained a three-stroke advantage during the first two holes and trailed by one after nine holes of play. Kniesly then found herself down by as many as seven strokes on the back before picking up four in the final four holes.

Senior Samantha Hatter fell by four strokes to Megan Dennis while freshman Jill Schmitmeyer lost by five to Lucy Eaton. Hatter held a two stroke lead after nine, but a seven on hole 12 gave the advantage to Dennis. She ended up shooting an 86 while Schmitmeyer posted an 80.
