Oilers in First at Gilda's Club Laker Fall Invite

Allendale, Mich.- The University of Findlay women's golf team completed day one of the Gilda's Club Laker Fall Invite, Sunday, Sep. 25 at the Meadows Golf Club, hosted by Grand Valley State University. The Oilers shot a round one score of 297 (+9) and are in first place, four strokes ahead of Tiffin University. More notably, the Oilers, who are ranked fourth in the nation, hold a nine shot lead over the fifteenth ranked Grand Valley State. 

The Oilers were led by sophomore Mary Kelly Mulcahy, an all-American selection last year, once again has continued to be a consistent performer in Findlay's lineup. She finished the day with a round of 72 (E) and is in a tie for second. She is currently one stroke behind Walsh's Emily Liptak who posted a round of 71 (-1). M. Mulcahy carded two bogeys and two birdies in her round today.

Assisting M. Mulcahy is senior Danbi Kim. Kim, who is back in the starting lineup this fall, has proven to be a reliable player for Coach Guarnieri thus far. She carded a a 73 (+1) today. Kim was one-under heading into her final four holes of the day but two late bogeys left her in a tie for fourth.

Junior Gabby Woods is in a tie for ninth as she carded a round of 75 (+3). Senior Jill Schmitmeyer is in a tie for sixteenth after a round of 77 (+5). Rounding out the lineup for the Oilers was sophomore Erin Mulcahy. Mulcahy is in a tie for 61st after a round of 85 (+13).

Competing as individuals in the tournament were junior Sarah Scarpill and freshman Hayley Dye. The two are both tied for sixteenth after carding rounds of 77 (+5).

Findlay led the field in par three and par four scoring. They averaged 3.05 on par threes and 4.20 on par fours. They struggled on the par fives, playing them at eleven-over par and averaging 5.55, the twelfth best average in the field. 

The Oilers will be back for the final round tomorrow, Monday, Sep. 26 with a shotgun start at 9am. 

 

Comments from the Coach

We kept fighting all day, we made a lot of big numbers but never gave up. Mary Kelly and Danbi played solid rounds. The conditions are expected to be tough tomorrow so we will make a few adjustments, just need a solid round to get it done.
