Findlay, Ohio – The University of Findlay women's golf team, ranked fourth in the latest Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) Division II rankings, played host to the first day of the William Beall Fall Classic at Findlay Country Club on Monday, Oct. 3. Cold temperatures in the morning, fast greens, and wind ranging from 10-20 mph made Monday's conditions challenging, resulting in a tournament-average round of 81. The two day, 54-hole event features four nationally ranked teams including the Oilers, #5 Indianapolis, #15 Grand Valley State, and #18 Missouri-St. Louis.

Through 36 holes of play, Findlay holds a nine-shot lead after shooting a two-round total of 593 (+17). Round one saw the Oilers in second, one shot behind GVSU after the home squad carded a 301 (+13), but a 292 (+4) in the second round, the 18-hole round of the day, catapulted Findlay into the top of the standings.

Sophomore Mary Kelly Mulcahy put together the top performance of the day, playing some of the best golf of her young career. On a day when the average score was 81, nearly two shots higher than the same tournament a year ago, Findlay's all-American opened the day with a 71 (-1). She followed that up with a 69 (-3), the lowest round relative to par of her career. On the day, Mary Kelly carded just three bogeys while making seven bogeys on her way to a 36-hole score of 140 (-4) which puts her in first place in the event, two shots ahead of Olivia Stoll of Grand Valley St. Mulcahy's score is the second-lowest 36-hole score in program history, but is the lowest 36-hole score relative to par.

Not far behind is senior Jill Schmitmeyer who made seven birdies on the day, carding a 74 (+2) in the first round an a 71 (-1) in the second to settle into third place with a 145 (+1). Schmitmeyer made her move as the sun began to set, making three birdies on her final nine holes to move up the leaderboard.

In a tie for 16th is sophomore Erin Mulcahy who had rounds of 79 (+7) and 75 (+3). Mulcahy battled a tough start, making bogey on four of her first five holes, but steadied the ship en route to a 154 (+10).

Junior Gabby Woods is tied for the tournament lead with Mary Kelly Mulcahy and Schmitmeyer with seven birdies and sits in a tie for 21st. Woods opened her day with a 42 (+6) on her first nine, but shot even-par on the back for a first-round score of 78 (+6). A second-round 77 (+5) gave Woods a 36-hole score of 155 (+11).

Rounding out the Oilers lineup was senior Danbi Kim who finds herself in a tie for 28th. Kim put together a pair of 78s (+6) to finish the day with a 156 (+12).
