Oilers Drop Heartbreaker Against Reigning G-MAC Champ
Findlay, OH – The University of Findlay women's soccer team faced the reigning Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) champion, the Fighting Scots of Ohio Valley on Thursday, October 18 at 1:00 PM and took a heartbreaking 1-0 loss in double overtime. With the defeat, Findlay falls to 9-3-2 overall and 8-3-2 in the conference while Ohio Valley improves to 11-2-3 overall with a 10-1-1 mark in the league.
From the start of the contest, physicality was key as the teams combined for six yellow cards in the first 45 minutes of action. Ohio Valley outshot the Oilers 9-1 in the first half, but Findlay turned up the aggression in the second half as the teams fired six shots, apiece.
Perhaps the best chance for the Oilers came just two-and-a-half minutes from the end of regulation when sophomore Shannon Marsh took a shot from ten yards out that bounced off the crossbar. Senior Megan Kupetz got the rebound and fired a shot from six yards out the was deflected by the Scots diving goalie. Off the ensuing corner kick by sophomore Samantha Church, Marsh again took a shot from six yards out that missed wide right.
In the first overtime, both teams managed just one shot each, but in the second overtime period, five-and-a-half minutes in, the Fighting Scots got a shot from 18 yards out by Paula Valbuena that found the back of the net, ending the contest.
Ohio Valley took 18 shots in the game to nine for Findlay. Junior Anna Money made a season-high ten saves in a losing effort while the Fighting Scots goalie made one save. Fouls were even at 19 each.
The Oilers are back in action on Tuesday, Oct. 23 when they travel to Tiffin for a G-MAC game set to being at 12:00 pm. That game will be the final game of the regular season for the Oilers, who have already clinched a G-MAC playoff spot.
