Findlay Splits with Minn. St. Mankato | Pick up First Win of Trip

Auburndale, FL- The university of Findlay's Baseball team took on the Minnesota State Mankato Mavericks in a double header on Friday Mar 4th in Auburndale Florida. The Oilers come into the contest 1-9 overall and 0-6 during their Spring Break trip.  

Game One- 7 Inning-(L 6-2) 

Minnesota State Mankato started the scoring off in the top of the second inning scoring a staggering 5 runs on 7 hits and left two men on base. 

Findlay would respond with 2 runs in the bottom of the inning, the first coming off and RBI double down left field by freshmen Austin Adelman that scored junior Nolan O'Connell (single). The second run came on a sacrifice fly from senior Christian Orr that allowed sophomore Andrew Micale (walk) to score, bringing the score to 5-2. 

The Mavericks would bring it back to a four-run lead in the 4th inning as they scored an unearned run to make the score 6-2 where it would stay for the remainder of the game.  

Senior Ryan O'Malley, junior Cam Farrar, and junior Aiden Lao also contributed hits for the Oilers who would finish with 6 on the game. 

Starting on the mound for the Oilers was senior Anthony Kyle. Kyle would throw 3.1 innings allowing 5 earned runs and striking out 3 batters. Senior Gavin Bailey came in to pitch in relief. Bailey threw 3 solid innings for the Oilers, striking out 4 batters and not allowing a runner to cross the plate. Freshmen Zavier Thornton would come in next and throw .1 innings without allowing a runner to reach the bases. Senior Ben Calisto would follow Thornton throwing the last out of this 7-inning game. 

Game Two- 7 innings- (W 15-5) 

Findlay came out swinging in game two scoring two runs in the top of the 1st inning when O'Malley reached on an error allowing Lao (walk) and freshmen Jabin Bates (single) to score.  

Findlay kept rolling in the second inning scoring two more runs. A single by Lao and a fielding error by the right fielder allowed both Orr and senior Brandon Emery to score giving the Oilers a 4-0 lead in the 2nd

Findlay scored another run in the 3rd inning off a sacrifice fly by Orr that brought O'Malley, who reached on an error, to score the 5th run of the game for the Oilers. 

Findlay added to their lead in the 4th inning as O'Malley laced a ball into left center for a 2 RBI double that scored Bates (fielder choice) and Lao (walk) to score. Farrar would bring O'Malley around to score on a single up the middle to make the score 8-0. Farrar would score on a wild pitch a few batters later to add another run to the lead. Orr would triple later in the inning to allow Micale (single) to score. Orr would sneak his way around to score during a rundown later in the inning to give Findlay an 11-0 lead. 

Findlay piled on the runs in the 5th. Junior Kyron Rogers scored when Farrar got hit in the back with bases loaded. Later in the inning Bates would score on a wild pitch. O'Malley would score the third run on the inning when Orr would get hit by a pitch with bases loaded. Findlay now had a controlling 14-0 lead after 5 innings of play. 

Findlay added a 15th run in the top of the 6th inning when Rogers scored on a double play. 

The Warriors would score five runs in the bottom of the 7th on three separate RBI doubles to bring the score to 15-5 to end the game and conclude the double header.  

Senior Bailey McCord started on the mound for the Oilers. McCord would pick up the win for the Oilers throwing 5.2 innings without allowing a single run. McCord would also strike out 6 of his 22 batters faced. Junior Sebastian Jones would come in to relieve McCord in the 6th inning. Jones would throw the remaining 1.1 innings allowing 3 earned run and striking out one batter. 

After finishing 1-1 on the day the Oilers now hold a 2-10 record on the season. The Oilers will play their last two games of their Florida trip on Mar 5th with a double header against West Virginia Wesleyan starting at 10:30 AM.
