Findlay Downs Heidelberg in Home Exhibition

Box Score

Findlay, OH – The University of Findlay women's basketball team hosted their lone exhibition game of the preseason on Friday, Nov. 5 in Croy Gymnasium. The Oilers welcome the Heidelberg Student Prince, an NCAA Division III opponent that competes in the Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC). Findlay had no problem with the visitors, soundly defeating Heidelberg by a score of 76-40. It was the second of three exhibition games in a matter of five days for the Oilers, who are playing each of the games with just eight players due to COVID protocols. Findlay, which played the Cincinnati Bearcats on Wednesday, will wrap up their exhibition slate with a game at Division I Purdue University on Sunday.

Findlay never trailed on Friday night in a game that was tied once at 2-2 just one minute into the contest. The Oilers then won on a 17-0 run over the course of the next five and a half minutes to blow the game wide open, ultimately taking a 23-4 lead through the first quarter. Five different Oilers scored during that 17-point run.

The Oilers would outscore the Berg in each of the final three quarters, including 19-8 in the final frame, leading to the decisive victory.

Turnovers were plenty in the contest as the teams combined for 59 turnovers in the game. 36 of those belonged to Heidelberg which turned into 42 points off turnovers for the Oilers. Most of those mistakes were forced by Findlay which recorded 22 steals in the victory.

On the night, the Oilers connected on 32-of-62 (.516) from the floor including 4-of-11 (.364) from deep. Heidelberg struggled as they hit just 15-of-46 (.326) from the field and only 8-of-23 (.348) from three-point range. Findlay held a 33-30 advantage on the glass and dominated under the basket, scoring 44 points in the paint.

Five players for Findlay scored in double-figures.

Senior Sydney Kin, who scored 20 points on Wednesday against Cincinnati, was again the team's leading scorer as she poured it 19 points on 8-of-14 shooting including a perfect 2-for-2 from three-point range. She also grabbed five rebounds and added three assists. Through two exhibition contests, the Oilers' two-time first-team all-conference selection has picked up right where she left off and looks to again be a problem for opponents this season.

Senior Bridget Landin played a good game, as well, scoring 15 points and corralling 9 rebounds. She was also second on the team with six assists.

Junior Serena Sammarone reached double-figures, scoring 13 points on an impressive 6-of-8 performance from the field. She added four rebounds and four assists while senior guard Amber Schweiger led the game with eight assists. Schweiger also had ten points to her credit.

Findlay's final ten-point scorer was senior Paige Bellman who had an even ten points on 4-of-6 shooting. Bellman had five boards, as well.

The Oilers will wrap up their preseason slate of games on Sunday at 2:00 pm when they take on the Purdue Boilermakers.
