The Oilers got a strong pitching performance from starter Colin Gossard, but never got the big hit they needed as they fell by a 2-1 final in the first game of the series.

The Lakers scored the first run of the game in the third inning and Findlay came back in the bottom half and answered with their lone run when sophomore Josh Schwerer laced a single to score freshman Brian Cappiello. That score tied the game at 1-1.

In the fifth, GVSU scored the go-ahead run and the Oilers, who stranded eight runners and hit into three double-plays in the game, never pushed across the answering run.

The Oilers combined for one run on six hits. They made one error.

Cappiello finished the day 2-for-3, had walk, a run scored, and a stolen base. It's the sixth game this season in which the freshman has had a multi-hit game.

Gossard, now 0-4 on the season, took the loss as he pitched six innings and threw 125 pitches, allowing two runs. He struck out four, walked six, and gave up five hits.

The second contest was another close game in which Grand Valley got ahead early and kept the Oilers batters off balance en route to their second victory of the day.

The Lakers scored a single run in the first inning to take a 1-0 lead and that lead held up until the third inning when Findlay scored their only run of the game, an RBI double off the bat of Cappiello, scoring sophomore Cameron Johnson.

GVSU then answered with two runs in the fourth inning and another single run in the sixth. In the seventh, the Blue and White put in their closer, Matt Williams, and he picked up his GLIAC leading 13th save of the season.

Findlay finished the game with one run on four hits. They made two errors and left six runners on base.

Last week's National Pitcher of the Week, senior Mason Mayberry took the loss on the hill as his record falls to 2-2 on the year. He pitched seven innings and gave up four runs on eight hits. He struck out six and walked three.

The series will conclude tomorrow, Sunday, April 24th, with another double-header with the Lakers. Those games begin at noon.
