#13 Oilers Home For 2 Against Northwood and Notre Dame (Ohio)

The University of Findlay men's basketball team, ranked 13th in the NABC/NCAA Division II poll, will be at home for a pair of games to round out the week.  They will host Northwood University in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contest on Thursday, December 1 at 8 pm and then face Notre Dame College (Ohio) on Saturday, December 3 at 3 pm.

The Series

The Oilers currently hold a 19-5 advantage in the all-time series against Northwood dating back to the 1962-63 campaign when Findlay came out on top by a score of 92-73.

Last season, the Oilers defeated Northwood 84-63 in Midland, Michigan behind 25 points from Nathan Hyde.

Aaron Robinson added 19 points while Tyler Sparks contributed 11 points in the win as well.

Kyle Caiola also reached double figures with ten points while Sean Samsel came off the bench to hit three, three pointers en route to nine points.

The Oilers hit on 28-of-53 (52.8%) shots from the field and came away with 12 steals on the defensive side of the ball.

The Oilers currently hold a 1-0 advantage in the all-time series against Notre Dame, winning their only meeting by a score of 83-65 during the 2006-07 campaign.

Josh Bostic led four Findlay players in double figures with 16 points.

Frank Phillips (15), Brent Schnipke (12) and Jordan Hilsher (10) rounded out the other double figure scorers for the Oilers.

The Oilers dished out 18 assists on their 30 field goal makes and recorded 14 steals in the win.

Aaron Laflin was the main trigger man for Findlay with eight assists while Phillips recorded six steals, four assists and four rebounds.

The University of Findlay

The University of Findlay men's basketball team cruised to a 77-57 win over the University of Illinois-Springfield on Monday, November 28 in Springfield, Illinois.

The Oilers, who improved their record to 4-1 on the year, took a 35-19 advantage at the break and saw their lead trimmed to nine points at 44-35 with 13:18 to play.  It was all Findlay after that however as the Oilers went on a 26-5 run in the next eight minutes to blow the game open.

As a team, Findlay shot 47.2 percent (25-of-53) from the field and drained 10-of-18 (55.6%) shots from three point range.

The Oilers also held a 45-28 advantage on the boards and held the Prairie Stars to a mere 36.4 percent (20-of-55) shooting clip.

Individually, junior forward Brad Piehl led the team with 14 points as he hit 4-of-6 shots from the field and 6-of-6 attempts from the free throw line.

Junior forward Jack Smith recorded a double-double with 11 points and a career-high tying 12 rebounds while junior guard Aaron Robinson splashed three triples en route to 11 points.

Sophomore guard Sean Samsel came off the bench to provide a season-high ten points while freshman forward Jake Heagen chipped in eight points and a career-high seven rebounds.

Northwood University

The Timberwolves are currently 3-2 on the season and are coming off of a 71-70 loss to the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.

On the season, Bobby Lewis is leading the team with a 16.8 points per game average while Booker Stoudmire is clicking for 10.0 points per outing.

Notre Dame College

Notre Dame is currently 1-3 on the season and coming off of a 66-65 loss to Washington and Jefferson.

Marcquice Taylor leads four Falcons who average in double figures with 15.5 points per game.

Eric Dummermuth (13.3), Taylor Rieger (12.3) and Phil Biggs (10.3) round out the other Notre Dame players who score in double digits on a nightly basis.

Lighting Up the Scoreboard

The Oilers are averaging 82.8 points per game on the season, the second best mark in the GLIAC.

Individually, sophomore forward Greg Kahlig ranks 18th with 14.0 points per contest.

Contesting Shots

The Oilers are making it difficult on their opponents as they are holding them to a mere 39.5 percent shooting clip on the year.  The percentage is the fourth best mark in the conference.

Pounding the Boards

The Oilers are ranked third in the GLIAC in rebounds per game at 41.4 and lead the conference with 28.4 defensive rebounds per outing.

Individually, junior forward Jack Smith checks in fifth at 8.6 rebounds per game while teammate Greg Kahlig, a sophomore forward, ranks 12th with 6.6 rebounds per contest.

Swatting Shots

The Oilers are averaging 4.5 blocks per game on the season, the second best mark in the league.

Individually, sophomore forward Greg Kahlig is ranked sixth in the GLIAC in blocked shots per game at 1.4 while sophomore forward Mark Frilling (1.2) and freshman forward Jake Heagen (1.0) are ranked 12th and 14th, respectively.

Grand Theft

The Oilers lead the conference in steals per game with 10.2 per contest.

Individually, sophomore forward Greg Kahlig is ranked fourth in the league in steals per game at 2.8.

Making Shots

Junior forward Brad Piehl leads the team and ranks tenth in the GLIAC in field goal shooting percentage, hitting 57.1 percent of his attempts.

Spreading the Wealth

The Oilers rank fourth in the GLIAC with 15.0 assists per game.

Individually, senior guard Kyle Caiola is ranked seventh in the GLIAC in assists per game with 4.2 per contest.

Automatic from the Line

Senior guard Kyle Caiola is hitting 91.7 percent of his free throw attempts on the year, the third best mark in the league.

In addition, junior forward Brad Piehl checks in 15th at 81.8 percent.

As a team, the Oilers are shooting 75.2 percent from the line, the fourth best mark in the GLIAC.

Stroking 3's

Junior guard Aaron Robinson is hitting 55.6 percent of his triple tries this year, the fifth best mark in the GLIAC.

Senior guard Kyle Caiola is draining 50.0 percent of his attempts as well, the seventh best mark in the league.

As a team, the Oilers are hitting 40.9 percent of their three pointers, which is the third best mark in the GLIAC.

Simply the Best

The Oilers have the best winning percentage in NCAA Division II competition since the year 2000, having won 290 games and lost only 58 for a percentage of .833.

A Tough Place to Play

The Oilers are 516-110 (.824) in Croy Gymnasium since they starting playing home games there during the 1969-70 season.

In the past nine years, the Oilers are a staggering 140-3 at home for a winning percentage of .979.

Conference Championships

The Oilers have won ten GLIAC South Division titles in their 14-year affiliation with the conference and have also won five conference tournaments, capturing titles in 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2010.

In the last ten years, the Oilers have won nine GLIAC South Division titles.

GLIAC Tournament Success

The Oilers currently sport a 22-6 record in the GLIAC Tournament, winning titles in 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009 and 2010. 

Findlay has appeared in the championship game of the event seven times in the past nine years.  They reached the finals in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010.

National Elite

The Oilers have appeared in nine of the last ten NCAA Division II National Tournaments with a 15-8 record, reaching the Elite Eight during the 2004-05 campaign and the Final Four in the 2008-09 season when they captured their first NCAA Division II National Championship. 

They also reached the Sweet 16 during the 2007-08 campaign.

Preseason GLIAC Poll

The Oilers received a league-best 170 points and 20 first place votes in the 2011-12 Preseason GLIAC Poll, which was released on November 2.

They have won nine GLIAC South Division titles in the past ten years.

Senior guard Kyle Caiola was tabbed a first team all-conference pick while junior guard Aaron Robinson earned second team all-league honors during the preseason.

Caiola, who was a first team all-league pick last year, averaged 14.0 points per game last season.

Robinson, an all-defensive team selection last year, averaged 10.2 points and 4.4 rebounds per game in 2010-11.

Preseason All-American

Senior guard Kyle Caiola was tabbed an honorable mention All-American by the Sporting News.

Caiola, a first team all-conference selection last year, averaged 14.0 points per game during his junior season.
