Oilers Escape With 67-64 Overtime Win Against Lake Erie

The University of Findlay men's basketball team escaped Painesville, Ohio with a 67-64 overtime victory against Lake Erie College on Thursday, January 12.  The win gives the Oilers a 12-3 record on the season with a 6-2 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC).

Senior guard Kyle Caiola scored the first four points of the overtime period to give Findlay a 62-58 lead, but the Storm quickly rallied by scoring four straight points of their own to tie the game at 62-62 with 2:17 remaining.

Junior forward Jack Smith then made 3-of-4 shots from the free throw line to give the Oilers a 65-62 lead, but Lake Erie's Nate Tait, who scored a game-high 28 points off the bench, connected on a lay-up to make the score 65-64 with only 18 seconds left.

Sophomore forward Greg Kahlig then made 2-of-4 shots from the charity stripe down the stretch to ice the game for Findlay.

Junior forward Brad Piehl led the team with 13 points on 5-of-6 shooting while Caiola contributed 12.

Junior guard Aaron Robinson also broke into double figures with ten points while Smith and freshman forward Jake Heagen both came off the bench to score nine points apiece.

The Oilers shot 47.8 percent (22-of-46) from the floor and held the Storm to a 39 percent (23-of-59) shooting clip.

Findlay also out-rebounded the Storm by a 40-27 margin, but turned the ball over 21 times.

The Oilers will hit the road again on Saturday to face Wayne State University at 3 pm in Detroit, Michigan.
