#11 Oilers Open Season Against Marygrove

The Oilers, ranked 11th nationally, will face Marygrove College on Saturday, Nov. 9 in their first game of the 2013-14 season.  Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Croy Gymnasium.

Don't forget to tune into 88.3 FM "WLFC" for Center Court with Charlie Ernst.  The radio show will be broadcast live from Fricker's every Monday evening during the season.  The show will be aired live from 6-7 p.m.  Fans are encouraged to attend the show so they can listen live over the sound system and enjoy the great food Fricker's has to offer.

Series Information

The Oilers hold a 1-0 advantage in the all-time series against Marygrove. 

The first and only meeting between the two programs came during the 2006-07 campaign when Findlay won by a score of 86-58.

The Oilers had five players reach double figures in the game and were led by Frank Phillips and Marcus Parker, who scored 15 points apiece.

Tyler Niekamp added 11 points while Josh Bostic and Tyler Evans scored ten points apiece in the win.

Findlay dominated the boards in the game, holding a 45-27 advantage in the rebounding department, and also came away with 14 steals.

The Oilers shot 47.8 percent from the field and hit nine three pointers in the game.  They also registered 23 assists on their 32 made field goal attempts.

Parker and Aaron Laflin each had five assists apiece in the victory.

Findlay

The #11 Oilers went 1-1 during their exhibition season, defeating Wright State and losing to Dayton.

The Oilers claimed an 80-76 win over Wright State on Nov. 1 behind 20 points from Alphonso Baity and Greg Kahlig.

Baity connected on 6-of-8 shot attempts from the field, knocking down three triples in the process.  Kahlig also made 6-of-8 field goal attempts during the game and went 7-of-11 from the line.

Jake Heagen stuffed the stat sheet with 17 points, seven rebounds, three assists and a steal while Dylan Kaufman contributed 11 points and three boards.

Ricardo Smith had a big impact off the bench for the Oilers as well, scoring four points to go along with five rebounds.

The Oilers fell 96-87 against Dayton on Nov. 2 despite 30 points from Kahlig, who made 9-of-14 shot attempts.  He also connected on 12-of-13 attempts from the free throw line and 4-of-7 shots from the behind the three point line to go along with six boards.

Kaufman added 25 points, hitting 7-of-14 shot attempts.  He also made all eight of his free throw attempts and connected on 3-of-8 attempts from long range.

Marygrove

The Mustangs have a 0-1 record on the season and will play Purdue Calumet on Nov. 8 before coming to Croy to face Findlay.

The Mustangs are coming off of a 101-38 loss at Eastern Michigan on Nov. 4 in an exhibition game.

Jimmy Stewart leads the team with a 16.0 points per game average.

Lighting it Up

Senior forward Greg Kahlig torched two NCAA Division I programs in the preseason and came out of the exhibition slate with averages of 25.0 points per game in an average of 26 minutes per contest.

Kahlig shot 59.1 percent (13-of-22) from the floor, 62.5 percent (5-of-8) from behind the three point line and 79.2 percent (19-of-24) from the free throw line during the two games as well.

Putting Points on the Board

The Oilers averaged 83.5 points per game in their two exhibition games this preseason.  They scored 80 in a win over Wright State and put up 87 in a loss to Dayton.

The team shot 51.7 percent (46-of-89) from the field in the two games and connected on 43.2 percent (16-of-37) of their three point tries as well.

Preseason GLIAC Player of the Year

Senior forward Greg Kahlig was voted the favorite to win the player of the year award in the GLIAC for the 2013-14 season.

Kahlig was a first team all-conference and first team all-region performer for the Oilers last season when he averaged 17.0 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.

Preseason Favorites

The Oilers were picked as the preseason favorite to win the GLIAC South Division as they received a league-best 24 first place votes in the annual poll.  They also had a league-high 192 votes and are coming off of back-to-back GLIAC Tournament victories.

Preseason All-GLIAC

Senior forward Greg Kahlig and junior forward Jake Heagen were each named first team all-conference in the preseason.

Kahlig averaged 17.0 points and 4.6 rebounds per game last year for the Oilers while Heagen sported averages of 8.7 points and 5.4 rebounds per contest.

Preseason National Rankings

The Oilers were ranked 11th in the preseason National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) poll.

The Oilers won their second straight GLIAC Tournament title last year and finished the season ranked 22nd in the nation with a 22-8 record.  They reached the NCAA Division II National Tournament, but were eliminated in the first round by Drury University, who eventually claimed the national title.

Preseason All-American

Senior forward Greg Kahlig was picked as a preseason All-American by NCAA Division II Bulletin after being named first team all-region and first team all-conference last year for the Oilers.

The Ft. Recovery, Ohio native averaged 17.0 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game during his junior season.  He also shot 48.9 percent from the floor, 44.1 percent from behind the three point line and 84.6 percent from the charity stripe.

An Elite Program

The Oilers have the second best winning percentage in NCAA Division II competition since the year 2000, having won 332 games and lost only 73 for an overall winning percentage of .820.

Racking up the Victories

The Oilers have been playing basketball since the 1902-03 campaign and have amassed a 1,443-859-2 (.626) record since their initial season of competition.

1,000-Point Club

Senior forward Greg Kahlig ranks 36th all-time at Findlay with 1,141 career points. 

He is chasing Lee Himmeger (1953-56) and Ron Marquette (1952-55) for 34th place on the all-time scoring list as both players poured in 1,162 points during their time with the Oilers.

A Tough Place to Play

The Oilers are 543-112 (.829) in Croy Gymnasium since they starting playing home games there during the 1969-70 season.  The number is even better in the past ten years as the Oilers are a staggering 153-4 at home for a winning percentage of .975.

Dominating GLIAC Home Games

The Oilers have won 86 of their last 87 regular season conference games at home.  They fell 57-55 to Tiffin University on Jan. 12, 2013.  Before that game, their last loss came in 70-68 fashion against Gannon University on February 12, 2004.

Handling Non-Conference Foes

The Oilers have posted a 67-3 record (.957) against non-conference opponents in games played at Croy Gymnasium during the past ten years.

Their last loss at home to a non-conference team came against #1 West Liberty State by a score of 90-74 on Nov. 14, 2012.

GLIAC Tournament Success

The Oilers sport a 28-6 record in the GLIAC Tournament, winning titles in 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2013. 

Findlay has appeared in the championship game of the event nine times in the past 11 years.  They reached the finals in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2013. 

The Oilers have captured seven GLIAC Tournament titles, the most in league history.  Their win in the 2013 tournament gave them two in a row away from home, the first time a school has ever accomplished the feat in the GLIAC.

Taking Care of Business

The Oilers have never lost a GLIAC Tournament game at home.  Since 2002-03, the Oilers have an 19-0 record in GLIAC Tournament games within the friendly confines of Croy Gymnasium.

The 20-Win Plateau

The Oilers have achieved 20 wins in each of the past 12 years and sport a sparkling 313-64 (.830) record since the 2001-02 campaign.

Dancing

The Oilers have appeared in 11 out of the last 12 NCAA Division II National Tournaments with a 16-10 record, reaching the Elite Eight during the 2004-05 campaign and the Final Four in the 2008-09 season when they captured their first NCAA Division II National Championship.

They also reached the Sweet 16 during the 2007-08 campaign.

Conference Championships

The Oilers have won 11 GLIAC South Division titles in their 16-year affiliation with the conference and have also won seven conference tournaments, capturing titles in 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2013.  Their seven tournament titles are the most in GLIAC history.

In the last 12 years, the Oilers have won ten GLIAC South Division titles.  Overall, Findlay has won GLIAC South Division titles in 1998, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013.
