Oilers to Face Walsh, Malone and Hillsdale

The University of Findlay men's basketball team will have three games in five days against Walsh University, Malone University and Hillsdale College.  The Oilers will be at home on Jan. 30 to take on Walsh at 8 p.m. before hitting the road to take on Malone at 3 p.m. on Feb. 1.  They will then return home to face Hillsdale on Feb. 3 at 8 p.m. in Croy Gymnasium.

Series Information

The Oilers hold a 14-7 lead in the all-time series against Walsh dating back to the 1964-65 campaign when Findlay came away with a 77-71 victory.

The Oilers swept the regular season series last season, winning 67-65 at Walsh and 83-67 in Findlay.

In the win at Walsh, Alphonso Baity hit a layup with only 21 seconds left to give the Oilers the victory as the Cavaliers were unable to convert down the stretch.

Jake Heagen stuffed the stat sheet with 11 points, eight rebounds and five assists while Greg Kahlig registered 11 points and five boards.

In the win at home, Greg Kahlig torched the Cavaliers for a career-high 38 points on 13-of-20 shooting.  He made 5-of-9 shot attempts from behind the three point line and also converted 7-of-8 attempts from the charity stripe.

Kahlig's 38 points were the most an Oilers player has scored in a game since NCAA Division II National Player of the Year Josh Bostic put up 37 in Findlay's 89-86 overtime win over Bellarmine University on March 17, 2009 in the regional final at Croy Gymnasium.

Brad Piehl and Jake Heagen also reached double figures with 11 and ten points, respectively.  Heagen added seven rebounds while Piehl grabbed six.

The Oilers currently lead the all-time series against Malone by a 28-14 margin, winning the first meeting by a score of 86-63 during the 1959-60 campaign.

The Oilers split the regular season series with the Pioneers last year, winning 74-62 at home and losing 77-69 on the road.

In Findlay's win at home, Greg Kahlig had 14 points and six rebounds while Jake Heagen added 13 points and six boards.

Aaron Robinson and Dylan Kaufman each recorded nine points while Brad Piehl tallied eight points, seven rebounds and three assists.

In the Oilers loss at Malone, Findlay shot only 36.2 percent (21-of-58) in the game, but did hit 21-of-23 (91.3%) attempts from the free throw line.  The Pioneers meanwhile connected on 49.1 percent (27-of-55) of their shot attempts and drained 11-of-25 (44%) three point tries in the game.

Jake Heagen had 18 points and eight rebounds while Greg Kahlig chipped in 18 points on 6-of-14 shooting.

Brad Piehl also reached double figures with 13 points to go along with 13 rebounds.

The Oilers currently own a commanding 45-7 advantage in the all-time series against the Chargers dating back to the 1959-60 campaign when Findlay won 90-59.

The two programs split their regular season series last season with each team winning on their home floor.  The Chargers defeated the Oilers by a score of 56-51 in Hillsdale before Findlay claimed a 74-66 win in Croy.

In the loss at Hillsdale, the Oilers had a difficult time putting the ball in the hole as they shot only 35.8 percent (19-of-53) from the floor.  They also hit only 28.6 percent (6-of-21) of their shots from behind the three point line while the Chargers managed a 48.9 percent (22-of-45) shooting clip in the game.

Greg Kahlig and Aaron Robinson led the team with ten points apiece.

Greg Kahlig led the way for Findlay in their home win with 27 points on 6-of-7 shooting.  He hit 4-of-5 shot attempts from long range and drained all ten of his shots from the charity stripe in the victory.

Aaron Robinson added 13 points while Jake Heagen contributed 12 points and five rebounds.

Findlay

The University of Findlay men's basketball team won their sixth straight game with a 74-49 win at home against Lake Erie College on Saturday, Jan. 25.

The Oilers raced out to a 45-25 lead at the break and then went into cruise control mode during the second half to improve to 13-3 on the year with a 9-3 mark in the GLIAC.

The Oilers shot 46.7 percent (28-of-60) from the floor and limited the Storm to a mere 29.8 percent (17-of-57) shooting clip.  The Oilers also forced 18 turnovers and held a 16-4 advantage in points off of turnovers in the win.

Greg Kahlig once led the way for Findlay with 21 points, five assists and four rebounds.

Dylan Kaufman added 15 points, three rebounds, three steals and two assists while Jake Heagen recorded his third double-double of the season with 11 points and a career-high tying mark of 12 rebounds.

Heagen also added four steals in the win and Alphonso Baity also reached double figures with 11 points.

Walsh

The Cavaliers are sitting at 12-3 on the year with an 8-3 record in conference play.  They have been led by Jesse Hardin, who is averaging 16.8 points and 4.7 rebounds per game.

Hrvoje Vucic is averaging 13.9 points and 6.1 rebounds per game while Trey Fletcher is chipping in 13.0 points and 4.2 rebounds per contest.

The Cavaliers are the highest scoring team in the league, averaging 86.1 points per game.

Malone

The Pioneers are 9-7 on the season with a 7-5 record in GLIAC play.  They have been led by Isiah Elliott, who is averaging 19.6 points, 4.4 assists, 3.5 rebounds and 1.8 steals per game.

Christian Graves is pumping in 14.8 points per game and making 3.3 three pointers per contest while Cory Veldhuizen sports averages of 14.3 points and 6.5 rebounds per outing.

Malone is averaging 83.1 points per game on the season and have seven players averaging more than four points per contest.

Hillsdale

The Chargers are 12-4 on the year with an 8-4 mark in the GLIAC.  They have been led by Tim Dezelski, who is stuffing the stat sheet with averages of 23.9 points, 9.9 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.5 blocks per game.

Kyle Cooper and Brandon Pritzl are also averaging in double figures on the season at 12.6 and 10.1 points per game, respectively.

An Elite Program

The Oilers have the second best winning percentage in NCAA Division II competition since the year 2000, having won 345 games and lost only 76 for an overall winning percentage of .819.  During that timeframe, the Oilers reached the Elite 8 in 2005, appeared in the Sweet 16 in 2008 and won the NCAA Division II National Championship in 2009 with a perfect 36-0 record.

1,000-Point Club

Senior forward Greg Kahlig is ranked 14th all-time at Findlay with 1,498 career points.  He is chasing Frank Phillips (2003-07) for 13th place on the all-time scoring list as Phillips registered 1,521 points during his tenure with the Oilers. 

Kahlig scored a season-high 34 points in the Oilers 85-48 win against Ashland on Jan. 23.  He also put up 32 points in the Oilers 86-73 win over Michigan Tech on Dec. 12 and  scored 30 in an 81-76 loss to Grand Valley State on Jan. 4. 

The Ft. Recovery, Ohio native posted a career-high 38 points in an 83-67 win over Walsh on Feb. 21, 2013 and has six 30-point games to his credit during his tenure with the program.

Getting Buckets

Senior forward Greg Kahlig is averaging 22.3 points per game this season, the fourth best total in the GLIAC and the 15th highest mark in the nation. 

The Oilers have not had any player average over 20 points per game in a season since Greg Denecker put up 20.3 points per contest during the 1993-94 campaign.

As a team the Oilers are averaging 84.6 points per game, the second best mark in the conference and 36th best output in the nation. 

They put up a season-high 114 points in a win over Notre Dame (Ohio) on Dec. 21 in Croy Gymnasium.  The point total was the most scored by a Findlay team since they defeated St. Mary's (Mich.) by a score of 120-70 on Dec. 15, 2001.

Defense Wins Championships

The Oilers are holding their opponents to a 38.9 percent shooting clip, the best mark in the league and the 11th best percentage in the nation.  They are also defending the three point line well and rank first in the conference by limiting their opponents to a 31.0 percent shooting clip from long range.

In addition, the Oilers are only giving up 68.1 points per game to their opponents, the fifth best mark in the league.

Triple Your Pleasure

The Oilers are hitting 39.8 percent of their three point tries this season, the third best mark in the conference.  Individually, sophomore guard Alphonso Baity leads the team with a 54.2 percent shooting clip from long range while senior forward Greg Kahlig is hitting 40.4 percent of his long range tries on the season.

Senior guard Sean Samsel and sophomore guard Dylan Kaufman have also been hitting a high amount of their triple tries and sport shooting percentages of 39.5 and 39.0, respectively, from long range.

The Oilers are also making 8.3 three pointers per contest, the fifth best total in the GLIAC.  Senior forward Greg Kahlig leads the team and ranks fifth in the conference with 2.5 made triples per contest.

Kahlig tied a school record with nine three pointers in the Oilers 85-48 win over Ashland on Jan. 23.

Pounding the Boards

The Oilers are averaging 38.9 rebounds per game this season, the third best total in the GLIAC.  They are led by junior forward Jake Heagen, who ranks sixth in the GLIAC with 7.1 rebounds per contest.

Heagen has recorded three double-doubles so far this season.  He had 13 points and 12 rebounds in a 96-68 win at Cedarville on Nov. 14 and recorded 20 points and 11 boards during the Oilers 86-69 loss at Northwood on Dec. 7.  The New Concord, Ohio native also posted a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds in Findlay's 74-49 win against Lake Erie on Jan. 25 in Croy Gymnasium.

Swatting Shots

Findlay is blocking 4.4 shots per game, the third best total in the GLIAC.  They have been blocking shots by committee and have five players averaging more than 0.5 blocks per contest.

Sharing the Rock

The Oilers are averaging 15.9 assists per game this year, the second best mark in the GLIAC.  Sophomore guard Alphonso Baity and senior forward Greg Kahlig lead the team with 3.1 assists per game, the 14th best total in the league.

Grand Theft

Sophomore guard Dylan Kaufman ranks third in the GLIAC in steals per game, recording 1.9 per game.  As a team, the Oilers are ranked third in the conference with 7.4 steals per contest.

Getting to the Line

Senior forward Greg Kahlig is making 5.8 free throws per game on the season, the fourth best total in the GLIAC.  He is also ranked second in the league in free throws attempted per game at 7.1 and is hitting 81.6 percent of his shots from the charity stripe, which is the 16th best mark in the league. 

For his career, Kahlig has made 373 free throws, the sixth-highest amount in the program since the 1986 campaign. 

As a team, The Oilers have made 292 free throws this season, averaging 18.3 points per game from the charity stripe.  Because of their ability to get to the foul line, the Oilers are making 6.6 more free throws per game than their opponents.

Staying Out of Foul Trouble

The Oilers are doing a good job of not fouling this season and are leading the GLIAC with only 15.3 personal fouls per contest.  The mark is also the fourth highest in the nation.

Putting the Ball in the Hole

The Oilers are shooting 48.6 percent from the field this season, the third best shooting clip in the GLIAC.  Sophomore forward John Staley leads the team with a 68.9 percent shooting clip this year.

Shooting into the Record Book

Senior forward Greg Kahlig hit nine three pointers en route to 34 points in the Oilers 85-48 win over Ashland University on Jan. 23 in Croy Gymnasium.  The nine triples made by Kahlig enabled him to tie the school record for most made three pointers in a game.  He now shares the record with current assistant coach Dustin Pfeifer, who hit nine three pointers against Hillsdale College on Feb. 28, 2006. 

His 13 three point attempts also tied the school record as he now shares the top spot with Chris Ireland and Marc Bishop.  Ireland fired up his 13 attempts against Shawnee State on Dec. 2, 1995 while Bishop set his mark against Tiffin on Dec. 1, 1998.

A Tough Place to Play

The Oilers are 551-112 (.830) in Croy Gymnasium since they starting playing home games there during the 1969-70 season.  The number is even better in the past ten years as the Oilers have posted a staggering 161-4 record at home for an incredible winning percentage of .976.

Dominating GLIAC Home Games

The Oilers have won 92 of their last 93 regular season conference games at home.  They fell 57-55 to Tiffin University on Jan. 12, 2013.  Before that game, their last loss came in 70-68 fashion against Gannon University on February 12, 2004.

Handling Non-Conference Foes

The Oilers have posted a 69-3 record (.958) against non-conference opponents in games played at Croy Gymnasium during the past ten years.  Their last loss at home to a non-conference team came against #1 West Liberty State by a score of 90-74 on Nov. 14, 2012.

Racking up the Victories

The Oilers have been playing basketball since the 1902-03 campaign and have amassed a 1,456-862-2 (.627) record since their initial season of competition.

Kahlig Named GLIAC Player of the Week

Senior forward Greg Kahlg has been named the GLIAC South Division Player of the Week twice this season. 

Kahlig first earned the honor on Nov. 20 for his performances in the Oilers first three games of the 2013-14 season.  Kahlig averaged 21.7 points, 6.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game, shooting 55.6 percent from the floor, 43.8 percent from behind the three point line and 80.0 percent from the charity stripe in the three contests.

He earned the honor again on Jan. 27 for his efforts in a pair of wins over Ashland and Lake Erie.  Kahlig averaged 27.5 points, 5.5 assists, 3.0 rebounds and 1.0 blocks per game in the two wins.  He also hit 58.1 percent (18-of-31) of his field goal attempts in the two games and connected on 59.1 percent (13-of-22) of his three point tries.

The 20-Win Plateau

The Oilers have achieved 20 wins in each of the past 12 years.  The last time they failed to reach the 20-win plateau came during the 2000-01 campaign when they went 19-11.

100-Point Plateau

The Oilers have scored over 100 points twice this season.  They put up 105 points in a win over Marygrove on Nov. 9 and also posted 114 points in a victory against Notre Dame (Ohio) on Dec. 21. 

The Oilers have scored over 100 points 177 times during the history of their program and sport a 171-6 (.966) record in those games.

Conference Championships

The Oilers have won 11 GLIAC South Division titles in their 16-year affiliation with the conference and have also won seven conference tournaments, capturing titles in 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2013.  Their seven tournament titles are the most in GLIAC history.

In the last 12 years, the Oilers have won ten GLIAC South Division titles.  Overall, Findlay has won GLIAC South Division titles in 1998, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2013.

GLIAC Tournament Success

The Oilers sport a 28-6 record in the GLIAC Tournament, winning titles in 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2013.  Findlay has appeared in the championship game of the event nine times in the past 11 years.  They reached the finals in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012 and 2013. 

The Oilers have captured seven GLIAC Tournament titles, the most in league history.  Their win in the 2013 tournament gave them two in a row away from the friendly confines of Croy Gymnasium, the first time a school has ever won back-to-back championships on the road in the history of the GLIAC Tournament.

Advantage Findlay

The Oilers have never lost a GLIAC Tournament game at home.  Since 2002-03, the Oilers have a 19-0 record in GLIAC Tournament games within the friendly confines of Croy Gymnasium.

Dancing

The Oilers have appeared in 11 out of the last 12 NCAA Division II National Tournaments and have recorded a 16-10 record in those games.  The team reached the Elite 8 for the first time in school history during the 2004-05 campaign and advanced to the Sweet 16 during the 2007-08 season. They then used that success to win a NCAA Division II National Championship during the 2008-09 campaign, finishing the year with a perfect 36-0 record.  Their 36 wins as an undefeated national champion are the most in the history of NCAA Division II men's basketball.

Preseason GLIAC Player of the Year

Senior forward Greg Kahlig was voted the favorite to win the player of the year award in the GLIAC for the 2013-14 season.  Kahlig was a first team all-conference and first team all-region performer for the Oilers last season when he averaged 17.0 points and 4.6 rebounds per game.

Preseason Favorites

The Oilers were picked as the preseason favorite to win the GLIAC South Division as they received a league-best 24 first place votes in the annual poll.

Senior forward Greg Kahlig and junior forward Jake Heagen were each named first team all-conference in the preseason.

Senior forward Greg Kahlig was picked as a preseason All-American by NCAA Division II Bulletin after being named first team all-region and first team all-conference last year for the Oilers.
