Oilers Face Tech and N. Mich. this Week

The University of Findlay men's basketball team will travel to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan this week to take on Michigan Technological University and Northern Michigan University. The Oilers will play the Huskies on Dec. 11 at 7:30 p.m. and then face the Wildcats on Dec. 13 at 3 p.m.

Don't forget to tune into 88.3 FM "WLFC" for Center Court with Charlie Ernst.  The radio show will be broadcast live from Fricker's on Monday evenings during the season.  The show will be aired live from 6-6:30 p.m.  Fans are encouraged to attend the show so they can listen live over the sound system and enjoy the great food Fricker's has to offer.

Series Information

The Oilers hold an 18-7 advantage in the all-time series against the Huskies dating back to the 1997-98 campaign when Michigan Tech was victorious by an 81-71 margin.

The two programs last met in the 2014 GLIAC Tournament championship game, which was won 69-63 by Findlay.  Greg Kahlig led the team with 22 points, eight rebounds and four assists in the win.

Jake Heagen also played well for the Oilers with 15 points, seven rebounds and three assists.

The Oilers sport a 16-3 record against the Wildcats dating back to the 1997-98 campaign when Northern Michigan came out on top by a score of 68-57. They have won the last ten games against the Wildcats as well.

Findlay came away with a 78-69 win over the Wildcats last year in Croy Gymnasium behind 20 points and eight rebounds from Dylan Kaufman  Jake Heagen stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, six rebounds and four assists while Greg Kahlig had ten points and seven boards.

The Oilers lost 70-62 to Lake Superior State University on Dec. 6 in Croy Gymnasium to even their record at 2-2 on the year.

The Oilers fell behind by a score of 31-19 at the half, but fought back in the second period. Findlay cut the Lakers lead to six on a three pointer from Nick Ruthsatz with only 1:12 remaining, but the Oilers would not get any closer down the stretch.

Findlay, who has only lost three conference games at home in their last 100 contests, shot 43.8 percent (21-of-48) from the floor. They hit 9-of-22 (40.9%) shot attempts from behind the three point line, but made only 52.4 percent (11-of-21) of their tries from the free throw line.

The Lakers, who received a game-high 18 points from Alex Williams, shot 45.5 percent (25-of-55) from the field and out-rebounded the Oilers by a 36-31 margin.

Dylan Kaufman led the Oilers with 15 points on the strength of a 4-of-7 performance from three point land while Ruthsatz came up with 14 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals off the bench in 24 minutes.

Jake Heagen had nine points, six rebounds and five assists while Elijah Kahlig scored seven points on 2-of-5 shooting.

Michigan Tech

The Huskies are 3-2 on the season with a 0-2 mark in GLIAC play. Preseason GLIAC Player of the Year Ben Stelzer has led the team and is averaging 23.6 points per game.  Stelzer is making 4.6 three pointers per game and is connecting on 47.6 percent of his shot attempts.

Jordan Chartier (9.6), Jason Hawke (8.8) and Kyle Stankowski (8.8) are also hovering around the double digit scoring mark per game.

Northern Michigan

The Wildcats are 4-4 on the year with a 2-0 record in GLIAC play. Jordan Perez leads the team with an average of 10.5 points per game while Marcus Hall is scoring 9.2 points per outing.

Terry Nash and Alex Sorenson are also off to good starts and are contributing 8.1 and 8.0 points per contest, respectively.

1,000-Point Plateau

Senior forward Jake Heagen will look to become the Oilers 43rd member of the 1,000-point club this season. Heagen has currently scored 939 points during his career at Findlay.

Filling the Stat Sheet

Senior forward Jake Heagen has been stuffing the stat sheet in the early portion of the season with averages of 12.8 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.0 blocks per game.

Making Shots

Junior forward John Staley leads the team and the GLIAC in field goal shooting percentage as he is hitting 72.7 percent of his tries this year.

Get it Out

The Oilers are swatting 5.2 shots per game this season, the best total in the GLIAC.  Senior forward Jake Heagen, sophomore forward Tyler Stern-Tucker and junior guard Dylan Kaufman are leading the way as they are alllocking 1.0 shots per contest.

For 3

The Oilers are shooting 35.5 percent from three point range this year, the fourth best mark in the league.  Junior guard Dylan Kaufman is leading the way while making 47.4 percent of his long range attempts, the seventh best mark in the GLIAC.

Making it Tough

The Oilers are making it tough for their opponents to get good looks this season and are ranked fourth in the GLIAC by holding their opposition to a 40.1 percent shooting clip from the field.

An Elite Program

The Oilers have the second best winning percentage in NCAA Division II competition since the year 2000, having won 358 games and lost only 81 for an overall winning percentage of .815.  During that timeframe, the Oilers reached the Elite 8 in 2005, appeared in the Sweet 16 in 2008 and won the NCAA Division II National Championship in 2009 with a perfect 36-0 record.

The 20-Win Plateau

The Oilers have achieved 20 wins in each of the past 13 years.  The last time they failed to reach the 20-win plateau came during the 2000-01 campaign when they went 19-11.

Findlay is one of only 14 teams in NCAA basketball to have at least ten straight 20-win seasons and the only NCAA Division II team with more than ten. A total of 1,065 teams play college basketball in the NCAA across all three divisions.
