Oilers to Face Cardinals in 1st Round

The Oilers will travel to University Center, Mich. on March 4 for their 2015 GLIAC Tournament quarterfinal game against Saginaw Valley State. The contest is scheduled to tip at 6 p.m.

Series Information

The Oilers hold a commanding 19-3 lead in the all-time series against Saginaw Valley State dating back to the 1992-93 campaign when the Cardinals were victorious by a score of 75-67.

The Oilers suffered an 82-75 loss at the hands of the Cardinals on Jan. 8. Findlay shot 43.5 percent (27-of-62) from the floor and hit 12-of-26 (46.2%) of their three point attempts. The Cardinals meanwhile connected on 29-of-55 (52.7%) of their field goal attempts and held a 46-26 advantage in points in the paint.

Jake Heagen led the Oilers with 22 points and seven rebounds while Elijah Kahlig posted 17 points on the strength of a 5-of-7 showing from the three point line. Taren Sullivan also reached double figures with 12 points off the bench.

Ricardo Smith had seven points, five rebounds and four assists while Dylan Kaufman recorded seven points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals.

The Cardinals were led by a trio of players in C.J. Turnage, Kellen Smith and Garrett Hall, who each had 15 points in the game.

Findlay

The Oilers clinched a share of their third straight GLIAC South Division title with an 86-70 win over Wayne State University on Feb. 26 in Croy Gymnasium.

The Oilers, who have now won 12 South Division titles in the past 14 years and a league-high 13 overall, opened up a 49-28 lead on the Warriors in the first half and cruised through the second half to earn the 5-seed in the 2015 GLIAC Tournament. They shot 50.9 percent (27-of-53) from the floor and made 27-of-35 (77.1%) from the free throw line in the victory.

Jake Heagen paced the Oilers on senior day with 22 points, six rebounds, three assists and two steals. He made 6-of-11 shot attempts from the field and canned 8-of-9 attempts from the charity stripe.

Ricardo Smith stuffed the stat sheet with 12 points, six rebounds and five assists while John Staley had ten points and six boards.

Elijah Kahlig also reached double figures with ten points and Dylan Kaufman had nine.

Taren Sullivan provided seven points, two rebounds and two assists off the bench while Tyler Stern-Tucker had six points and four rebounds too.

Saginaw Valley State

The Cardinals are 20-8 on the season and have been led by C.J. Turnage, who is averaging 14.3 points, 5.9 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.4 steals per game.

Garrett Hall is averaging 13.6 points per game and Damon Bozeman is also scoring in double figures at 12.4 points per contest.

GLIAC Postseason Honors

Senior forward Jake Heagen was named first team all-conference on March 2. Heagen, who was a second team all-conference performer for the Oilers last season, is averaging 15.0 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.5 steals per game. He is also shooting 44.7 percent from the floor and is canning 37.6 percent of his three point tries.

In addition, junior forward John Staley was selected to the all-defensive team. Staley is averaging 9.2 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. The Dayton, Ohio native is also hitting 64.4 percent of his field goal attempts, the best mark in the league.

1,000-Point Plateau

Senior forward Jake Heagen became the Oilers 43rd member of the 1,000-point club with 14 points in the Oilers 85-50 win over St. Andrews on Dec. 19. Heagen has now scored 1,279 points in his career and is chasing Bill Kotterman (1978-81) for 26th place on the all-time scoring list. Kotterman ended his career with 1,303 points.

Conference Championships

The Oilers have won 13 GLIAC South Division titles in their 18-year affiliation with the conference and have also won eight conference tournaments, capturing titles in 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2014. 

In the last 14 years, the Oilers have won 12 GLIAC South Division titles.  Overall, Findlay has won GLIAC South Division titles in 1998, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014 and 2015.

GLIAC Tournament Success

The Oilers sport a 31-6 record in the GLIAC Tournament, winning titles in 2004, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2014.  Findlay has appeared in the championship game of the event ten times in the past 12 years.  They reached the finals in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2014. 

The Oilers have captured eight GLIAC Tournament titles, the most in league history.  Their win in the 2013 tournament gave them two in a row away from the friendly confines of Croy Gymnasium, the first time a school has ever won back-to-back championships on the road in the history of the GLIAC Tournament.  Their victory in 2014 marked the first time a GLIAC school has won three straight tournament championships.

Findlay has reached the championship game of the GLIAC Tournament ten times and sport an 8-2 record in those games.
