Oilers Back at Home to Host SVSU/Hillsdale

The Oilers will be at home this week to host Saginaw Valley State (1/7) and Hillsdale (1/9). The Oilers will face the Cardinals at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday before taking on the Chargers at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

Don't forget to tune into 88.3 FM "WLFC" for Center Court with Charlie Ernst.  The radio show will be aired live from Fricker's on Monday evenings during the season.  The show will be aired live from 6-6:30 p.m.  Fans are encouraged to attend the show so they can listen live over the sound system and enjoy the great food Fricker's has to offer.

Series Information

The Oilers hold a 19-4 lead in the all-time series against Saginaw Valley State dating back to the 1992-93 campaign when the Cardinals were victorious by a score of 75-67.

The Cardinals topped the Oilers twice last season, defeating Findlay 82-75 during the regular season and 69-62 in the first round of the GLIAC Tournament.

In the loss during the regular season, Findlay shot 43.5 percent (27-of-62) from the floor and hit 12-of-26 (46.2%) of their three point attempts. The Cardinals meanwhile connected on 29-of-55 (52.7%) of their field goal attempts and held a 46-26 advantage in points in the paint.

Jake Heagen led the Oilers with 22 points and seven rebounds while Elijah Kahlig posted 17 points. Taren Sullivan also reached double figures with 12 points off the bench.

In the tournament loss, Heagen tied his career-high with 28 points on 11-of-16 shooting. He also added five rebounds, four rebounds and two assists.

Sullivan also reached double figures with ten points to go along with four assists, three rebounds and three steals.

The Oilers currently own a commanding 47-8 advantage in the all-time series against the Chargers dating back to the 1959-60 campaign when Findlay won 90-59.

The Oilers claimed a 65-58 win at Hillsdale last season as they shot 50 percent (25-of-50) from the floor and canned 10-of-20 (50%) shot attempts from behind the three point line. They also came away with 11 steals and limited the Chargers to a 5-of-20 (25%) showing from three point range.

Jake Heagen led Findlay with 21 points on 7-of-15 shooting. He made 5-of-7 attempts from long range and also contributed five rebounds, two assists and two steals in the win.

John Staley produced eight points and four rebounds while Taren Sullivan, Tyler Stern-Tucker and Dylan Kaufman each scored seven points apiece in the game.

Nick Ruthsatz and Ricardo Smith each had six points while Elijah Kahlig chipped in three points, three assists and four steals.

Findlay

The Oilers used a big first half to claim an 82-66 win over Grand Valley State University on Jan. 3 in Allendale, Mich.

The Oilers jumped out to a 57-36 at the break on the strength of hot shooting from behind the three point line. In the opening period, the Oilers canned 12-of-21 (57.1&) tries from three point range and hit 60 percent (21-of-35) of their field goal attempts. Martyce Kimbrough contributed heavily in the Oilers offensive explosion during the first half with 22 points, which included six triples.

For the game, the Oilers shot 45.5 percent (25-of-55) from the field and made a season-high 13-of-29 (44.8%) tries from three point land. They also forced 17 turnovers in the game as well.

Kimbrough paced the squad with a career-high 29 points on 8-of-14 shooting. He made 6-of-11 shot attempts from behind the three point line and also canned all seven of his free throw attempts in the win.

Taren Sullivan reached double figures with 13 points, five rebounds and three assists while Nick Ruthsatz and Dylan Kaufman each pumped in nine points apiece in the game.

Tyler Stern-Tucker provided valuable minutes off the bench with six points and seven rebounds while Elijah Kahlig had five points in the victory, which was the first road win against the Lakers since the 2008-09 campaign.

Saginaw Valley State

The Cardinals are 9-2 on the year with a perfect 6-0 mark in GLIAC play. They are coming off of a 94-89 win against Walsh on Jan. 3 and have won eight straight contests.

Saginaw Valley State is averaging 85.8 points per contest this season and have been led by junior C.J. Turnage, who is scoring 17.1 points per game. Turnage is also grabbing 6.1 rebounds per game to go along with 2.8 assists and 1.5 steals per outing.

Senior Damon Bozeman is scoring 13.4 points per game and junior Garrett Hall is chipping in 10.7 points per contest.

Hillsdale

The Chargers are 8-2 on the year with a 4-2 record in the GLIAC and are coming off of a 73-70 win over Malone on Jan. 3.

The Chargers are averaging 81.4 points per outing and have been led by senior Kyle Cooper, who is averaging a GLIAC-best 23.9 points per contest. Cooper is also averaging 9.7 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game.

Sophomore Stedman Lowry is scoring 13.6 points per game while senior Jason Pretzer and freshman Nate Neveau are also averaging in double figures at 11.7 and 10.9 points per contest, respectively.

A Career Day

Sophomore guard Martyce Kimbrough poured in a career-high 29 points in the Oilers 82-66 win at Grand Valley State on Sunday. Kimbrough connected on a career-high 8-of-14 shot attempts and also made a career-high 6-of-11 tries from three point range. The Lima, Ohio native hit all seven of his attempts from the charity stripe in the victory as well.

1,000-Point Plateau

Senior guard Dylan Kaufman is looking to become the Oilers 44th player to reach the 1,000-point plateau during his senior season with the team. During his career, Kaufman has scored 872 points, leaving him 128 points shy of reaching the milestone.

Magic Touch

Senior forward John Staley is hitting 70.1 percent (47-of-67) of his field goal attempts this season. Staley's shooting percentage is the best mark in the GLIAC this year.

Staley set a single season school record last season by converting 64.1 percent (107-of-167) of his shot attempts.

Stroking 3's

Sophomore guard Martyce Kimbrough is ranked fourth in the GLIAC with 28 made three pointers this season. He is making 2.5 triples per contest and shooting 41.8 percent (28-of-67) from three point range.

A Tough Place to Play

The Oilers are 573-116 (.830) in Croy Gymnasium since they starting playing home games there during the 1969-70 season.  They have gone undefeated at home eight times in a season since they began play in Croy Gymnasium as well. 

In the past ten years the Oilers have posted a staggering 148-8 record at home for an incredible winning percentage of .949.

Dominating GLIAC Home Games

The Oilers have won 106 of their last 111 regular season conference games at home.  From 2004-13, the Oilers won 84-straight GLIAC games in Croy Gymnasium.
