Oilers Finish Runner-Up at G-MAC Championship

Results

Lexington, Ky. – The University of Findlay men's golf team fell shy of defending last year's conference title, finishing runner-up on Saturday, April 20 at the 2019 edition of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) Championship. As a team the Oilers shot a 297 (+9) in Saturday's final round, but, after entering the final day tied for second with eventual champion, Trevecca Nazarene, that score was not enough to keep pace with the Trojans who shot the only sub-par round of the event, scoring a 286 (-2). Findlay's 54-hole score of 892 (+28) was 11 shots off the lead and eight shots ahead of Hillsdale College who took third.

Freshman Caleb Westfall entered the final round with a one-shot lead in the event and was looking to become Findlay's first ever conference tournament medalist. A trio of players from Trevecca Nazarene would prevent that from happening as Westfall ended the tournament in a tie for third with a 54-hole score of 220 (+4) after shooting a 76 (+4) in the final round. With the top-five finish, Westfall secured his spot on the all-conference team in his first year with the Orange and Black.

Earning his third all-conference honor of his career is junior Luke Kelly who would finish the tournament in fifth after a 74 (+2) on Saturday gave him a 54-hole score of 222 (+6).

Freshman Tanner Grzegorczyk and junior Sam Griffith each recorded top-20 finishes for the Oilers. Grzegorczyk had Findlay's best round on Saturday, shooting a 73 (+1) to end the event with a 226 (+10) in a tie for 13th. Griffith posted a 74 (+2) and finished in a tie for 19th with a 228 (+12).

Rounding out the Oilers' lineup was last year's G-MAC Championship runner-up, senior Dylan DeWitt who would shoot his third 77 (+5) of the weekend to end with a 231 (+15) in 24th.

Findlay, ranked fifth in the Midwest Region, will now focus on the NCAA DII Super Regional which will be held in Hot Springs, Arkansas on May 9-11.
