Madonna Sweeps Oilers In Home Opener

The University of Findlay women's softball team had their home opener on Saturday, March 21 at Anderson Field.  They lost a doubleheader against Madonna University losing the first game 5-4 and the second game 3-2.  The doubleheader loss gives the Oilers a 10-9 record on the season.

In the first game, Bonnie Zappitelli took the loss on the mound allowing three runs and striking out two hitters in four innings pitched.  Jenna Inman pitched the final three innings of the game and allowed two runs and struck out one hitter.

The Oilers scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as they began their threat to comeback in the game.  They were down by two runs heading to the bottom of the seventh.  The Oilers scored one run in the seventh to make it a one run contest, but unfortunately they fell just short of completing the comeback as Madonna claimed the victory.

Morgan Arnold had a big game at the plate for the Oilers as she finished the game with two doubles, a home run to center field and three runs batted in.

Lauren Trumpler added a double while Abby Funk added two singles and Brooke Scherger finished with two singles and one run scored.  Katie Dunphy added a single and one run scored in the contest.

In the second game, Chelsea McManaway started the game on the mound and got the no decision allowing only one run and striking out ten hitters in five innings.  Jenna Inman took the loss on the mound for the Oilers giving up two runs and four hits in two innings.

The Oilers were up 2-1 heading into the seventh inning.  Unfortunately, they gave up two runs in the top of the seventh and when it was their turn to bat in the bottom of the seventh they couldn't muster the runs to claim the victory.

Meredith Shepherd finished the game with a double, a single and one run batted in while Abby Funk contributed a run batted in on a sacrifice fly.

Destinie Keeton finished with two singles while Hayley Apple and Emily Stewart each added a single in the contest.

The Oilers return to the field on Monday, March 23 when they travel to Toledo, Ohio to face Lourdes College in a doubleheader with the first game slated to begin at 3:30pm.
