Oilers Drop Two Against Hillsdale

Oilers Drop Two Against Hillsdale

On Saturday April 23rd, The University of Findlay softball team hosted the Hillsdale College Chargers for a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) double header at Anderson Field in Findlay, Ohio.  The Oilers dropped the first game 1-0 and fell in the second game 5-2.  The losses move Findlay to 29-17 on the season and to 15-9 in the GLIAC.

Game 1 L 1-0 (Box Score)

Hits were hard to come by in the first matchup of the day, as both teams had four hits each.

On the mound for the Oilers, junior Jenna Inman started the game pitching four innings.  She gave up no runs and four hits with one strikeout.  Sophomore Chelsea McManaway (15-5) picked up the tough loss after coming in relief to pitch the final three innings.  She finished giving up one run on two hits with four strikeouts.

The offense failed to get going until junior Amanda Delmonte managed to single in the third for the Oilers, but nothing would come from it.

Hillsdale scored in the top of the fifth on a RBI double following a walk to take a 1-0 lead.

Freshman Carleigh Cousino walked and freshman Breanna Cleland singled in the bottom of the fifth, but again the Oilers were unable to capitalize.

The Chargers were able to hold off Findlay once again in the bottom of the seventh.  Cousino led off the inning with a single, and after a strikeout, Delmonte singled.  The rally would come to a halt, as a strikeout and fly out to left field ended the game with Hillsdale on top 1-0.

At the plate, the Oilers were led by Delmonte who finished the game 2-for-3.

Game 2 L 5-2 (Box Score)

The Oilers were able to score two late runs, but their rally wouldn't be enough.

Findlay recorded seven hits, while Hillsdale registered eleven.  Junior Katie Dunphy singled in the first for the Oilers and they picked up two more hits in the second with singles by Delmonte and Cleland.  Sophomore Madison Arnold singled in the fifth as well.

Hillsdale scored two runs in the bottom of the third and tacked on one run in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.

The Oilers were finally able to get on the scoreboard in the seventh inning.  Cousino led off with a walk, then back-to-back singles by Delmonte and Cleland loaded the bases.  Two runs would come across the plate on a throwing error, but Findlay failed to get anything else going to put the final score at 5-2.

Freshman Hailey Bryan (12-8) took the loss on the hill for Findlay.  She pitched three and two thirds innings giving up three runs on eight hits with one strikeout.

At the plate, the Oilers were led by Delmonte and Cleland, who both finished 2-for-3.

The Oilers return to the field on Sunday, April 24th as they travel to Big Rapids, Mich. for a double header against Ferris State University.  The first game is set to begin at 12pm.
