Oilers Drop Two in Non-Conference Play

Rosemont, Ill. - The University of Findlay softball team dropped both games during double-header play on Friday, February 23. In their first game, the Oilers were defeated by the Missouri S&T Miners in a 6-2 final. In game two, Findlay dropped 4-3 to the William Jewel Cardinals.

Game 1 | L 6 – 2 (Box Score)

Findlay seemed to be in trouble early during game one. In the top of the first, the Oilers faced a bases loaded situation with nobody out. Freshman Megan Fisher and the Oiler defense were able to limit the damage to only one run, with Fisher recording a strikeout and three ground balls.

The Miner's lead did not last long thanks to Destinie Keeton and her solo-homerun in the bottom of the second. The game-tying homerun was Keeton's first of the year.

Missouri S&T increased their lead in the top of the third, adding two more runs by way of a sacrifice fly and a wild pitch.

Facing a 3-1 deficit, the Oilers responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the fifth inning. Rebecca Harvey picked up the RBI and scored Keeton from third base, cutting the lead to 3-2 heading into the top of the sixth.

The Oilers would not see the score this close again, giving up one run in the sixth and two runs in the seventh to bring the score to the 6-2 final.

Keeton was the only Oiler to record multiple hits on the game, with the homerun and a single. Also recording singles were Salwa Al-Hajabed, Amanda Delmonte, Allison Brunner, and Dylan Wiley.

Findlay had three pitchers see action during the game. Fisher (0-1) was the starter, recording three innings, three earned runs, and two strikeouts during the loss. Junior Molly Crosby went two innings, giving up only two hits and zero earned runs. Freshman Caragyn Yanek finished the game for the Oilers, going two innings while allowing three runs (two earned) and giving up four hits.

Game 2 | L 4 – 3

The Oilers struck first in game two, scoring a run in the first inning through an RBI from Senior Madison Arnold. Her single scored Senior Meredith Shepherd and boosted Findlay to a 1-0 lead.

After Senior Destinie Keeton reached on a walk and Arnold reached on a hit by pitch, Senior Kelley Cejer delivered a single to score them both and add two more runs to the Oiler lead.

The Cardinals evened the score in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs on three singles and an error.

Findlay went scoreless for the last four innings of the game. The Cardinals were able to squeeze out another run in the bottom of the sixth to secure the 4-3 victory.

Also adding hits during the game for Findlay were Shepherd, Salwa Al-Hajabed, and Rebecca Harvey.

Freshman Caragyn Yanek started the game on the mound, pitching for two innings while allowing one run on two hits. Junior Hailey Bryan received the pitching loss, going for four innings and allowing three runs on three hits.

The Oilers will be back in action tomorrow, February 23, with more double-header play in Rosemont, Illinois. Findlay will take on the Lewis University Flyers at 10:00 AM in the first game, and will play the University of Wisconsin Parkside Rangers at 2:30 PM in the second.
