Welch, Charnigo to Compete in USATF Championship

Justin Welch and Stephanie Charnigo, two former UF track standouts, will compete in the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championship on June 25-28 in Eugene, Ore.

Welch, a former four-time NCAA Division II national champion for the Oilers, will compete in the hammer throw on June 25. Charnigo meanwhile will run in the 1500-meter, which is slated for June 26.

Welch had a long and distinguished career for the Oilers. He won national titles in the hammer throw (2014, 2015) and also captured championships in the weight throw (2014, 2015). He was named the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Field Athlete of the Year in 2015 and was named the Midwest Region Field Athlete of the Year four times (2014 indoor, 2015 indoor, 2014 outdoor, 2015 outdoor). The Luckey, Ohio native was also named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Field Athlete of the Year twice.

Charnigo was a six-time NCAA Division II All-American for the Oilers and also had a hand in four GLIAC championships during her career.

Both athletes competed in the event last year. Welch was sixth in the hammer throw and Charnigo took eighth in the 1500.
