Combs Wins National Title | Oilers Lead Championship

The University of Findlay men and women's outdoor track and field teams wrapped up the opening day of competition at the 2021 NCAA Division II National Championship on May 27 in Allendale, Mich.

The Oilers were led by senior Austin Combs, who brought home a national title in the hammer throw. Combs took over first place in the event with a throw of 71.23 on his second attempt and then secured the championship with the winning throw of 71.99 in his sixth attempt. His throw of 71.99 meters established a new meet and Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC) record. It was also the fourth-best all-time at the NCAA Division II level.

The Findlay, Ohio native has now won three national championships during his career at Findlay. He won the 2018 indoor title in the weight throw and then returned to win it again in 2019. He will be back in action again tomorrow when he competes in the discus.

Junior Sterling Mungro, who won an indoor title this year in the weight throw, also competed for the men in the hammer throw and took third place with a toss of 69.54 meters to earn All-American accolades.

The performances by Combs and Mungro have the men's squad in first place after day one with 16 points.

On the women's side, senior Savannah Amato earned All-American honors in the pole vault after taking sixth place with a mark of 4.05 meters to give the Oilers three points, the 16th-best total after day one of the event.

Sophomores Morgan England and Lindsey Kluesener tied for 11th in the event at 3.80 meters.
