Oilers Open GLIAC Play Against Lakers, Timberwolves

The University of Findlay women's basketball team will open Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) play this week at home against Lake Superior State University and Northwood University.  The Oilers and Lakers will play on Thursday, Nov. 29 at 8 p.m. before the Timberwolves come to town for a 3 p.m. contest on Saturday, Dec. 1 in Croy Gymnasium.

The Series

The Oilers trail by a 14-7 margin in the all-time series against the Lakers dating back to the 1985-86 campaign when Lake Superior State smacked Findlay by a score of 88-61.

Last season the Oilers closed their regular season with a 55-41 win at Lake Superior State.

The Oilers only shot 35.2 percent (19-of-54) from the floor, but drilled 8-of-19 (42.1%) shots from behind the three point line.  They also held the Lakers to a mere 26.8 percent (15-of-56) shooting clip and forced 20 turnovers in the win.

Clare Aubry led the team with 12 points while Kayla Brown had nine.

Kendra Elam provided eight points and a career-high nine rebounds while Kristin Klausing had eight points and three assists.

Lacey Kessler chipped in seven points while Ashley Andrews stuffed the stat sheet with five points, six assists and five rebounds.

The Oilers hold a 13-4 advantage in the all-time series against Northwood dating back to the 1997-98 campaign when Findlay came away with a 73-51 victory.

A year ago, the Oilers claimed a 59-44 win over the Timberwolves behind a strong second half performance in Croy Gymnasium.

The Oilers fell behind 44-40 at the 11:46 mark of the second half and closed the game on a 19-0 run in the final 11 minutes of the contest.

As a team, the Oilers came up with a season-high 19 steals and forced Northwood into 30 turnovers, which led to 29 points for Findlay.

Kaitlyn Nelson led the Oilers with a season-high 16 points and six rebounds.  She hit 8-of-13 shots and also added three blocks and two steals.

Kayla Brown continued her solid play with 15 points, seven rebounds and six steals while Saira House added seven points, seven assists, a career-high seven steals and six rebounds.

The University of Findlay

The University of Findlay women's basketball team came away with a 90-65 win over Notre Dame College on Wednesday, Nov. 21 in South Euclid, Ohio to give them a 2-0 record on the season.

The Oilers were paced by Kayla Brown, who poured in a career-high 29 points on 11-of-18 shooting.  Brown also drilled 5-of-9 shot attempts from behind the three point line and added five steals, three rebounds and three assists.

Tai Dotson also reached double figures with 12 points and five rebounds while Kelsey Lewis contributed nine points and four boards.

Margaret Wuebker had a good all-around game with eight points, seven rebounds, two assists and two steals while Ashley Andrews, Lacey Kessler and Kristin Klausing recorded six points apiece.

The Oilers shot 54.9 percent (28-of-51) from the floor and drained 9-of-20 (45%) three point attempts in the win.  They also recorded 14 steals and held a 40-29 advantage on the boards.

Lake Superior State University

The Lakers are currently 1-3 on the season and have been paced by Maria Blazejewski's 20.5 points and 9.0 rebounds per game.

Raven Trammell and Kandace Crittendon are also averaging in double figures at 12.3 and 11.5 points per game, respectively.

Northwood University

The Timberwolves sport a 2-2 record on the season and are coming off of an 82-49 win over Chaminade in Honolulu, Hawaii on Nov. 23.

Rachel Church leads the team with a 12.2 points per game average while Gabrielle Rivette (11.0) and Sarah Spring (10.0) are also averaging in double figures.

Lighting Up the Scoreboard

Senior forward Kayla Brown has been scoring in bunches to start the season, averaging 26.5 points per game.  Her points per game total leads the GLIAC and is enabling Findlay to average 90.5 points per outing, the best mark in the league.

Grand Theft

The Oilers are averaging 18.5 steals per game, the best total in the GLIAC.  Individually, senior forward Kayla Brown, senior guard Kendra Elam and junior guard Karli Beasley are all snatching 3.0 steals per outing, which is tied for the top mark in the league.

Dropping Dimes

The Oilers rank third in the GLIAC in assists per game with 18.0 per game. 

Triple Your Pleasure

Senior forward Kayla Brown leads the conference in three point shooting, making 4.0 per game.  She has connected on 46.7 percent (7-of-15) of her attempts thus far.

1,000-Point Club

Senior forward Kayla Brown will look to become the 19th member of the Oilers 1,000-point club this year.

Brown has scored 807 points during her career and has also added 320 rebounds during her tenure with the program.

Teammate Laura Piehl was the last Oilers player to crack the 1,000-point plateau as she has racked up 1,262 career points and will hope to add to her total this season.

Career Highs

Junior forward Kayla Brown established a new career-high with 29 points in the Oilers 90-65 win on the road at Notre Dame (Ohio) on Nov. 21.

Brown hit 11-of-18 shots from the field and drained five three pointers in the game.

Reaching the 90-Point Plateau

The Oilers have scored 90 or more points 62 times since the 1978-79 season and sport a 61-1 (.984) record in those games.

Their only loss came at the hands of Wilmington, who defeated the Oilers by a score of 110-98 in 1985.

Preseason GLIAC Poll

The University of Findlay women's basketball team was picked to finish third in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) South Division as the league office announced their annual preseason poll on Wednesday, Oct. 31.

The Oilers, who finished last season with a 15-12 record, received 121 votes in the poll and trailed Tiffin University (140) and Ashland University (184) in the South Division.  The Eagles received all 23 first place votes in the poll, which was based on votes by members of the media.

Ferris State University was tabbed as the favorite to win the North Division after receiving 15 first place votes and a total of 174 votes overall.

Preseason All-GLIAC

Senior forward Kayla Brown was honored as a preseason first team all-conference pick.

Brown earned second team honors last year as a junior after averaging a team-high 12.7 points and 5.1 rebounds per game.  She also recorded 2.2 steals per game and drained 46 three pointers. 

Brown has scored 754 points during her career and has added 317 rebounds.  She will look to become the Oilers 19th member of the 1,000-point club in her final year with the program.

Winning GLIAC South Division Titles

The Oilers have won two out the last three GLIAC South Division titles (2009-10, 2010-11) and as a program, have captured championships in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2010 and 2011.

GLIAC Tournament

The Oilers have appeared in the GLIAC Tournament four times in their history.  During the 2009-10 campaign, the Oilers won a GLIAC Tournament game for the first time in school history, defeating Hillsdale College 66-62 to advance to the second round.
