Brown Reaches 1,000, Oilers Cruise to 67-37 Win over Panthers

Senior forward Kayla Brown became the 19th member of the Oilers 1,000-point club in the Oilers 67-37 win over Ohio Dominican University on Thursday, Jan. 10 in Croy Gymnasium.

With the Oilers up by a score of 50-27 with 15:24 remaining in the game, Brown found herself two points shy of reaching the milestone.  She then drained a three pointer to go over the 1,000-point plateau and finished the evening with 18 points on 5-of-10 shooting. 

The Mt. Blanchard, Ohio native now has 1,003 career points.  Brown also tallied five steals and four rebounds in the win as the Oilers set a new record for steals in a game with 28.  The previous record of 27 was set in a 75-57 win over Walsh University on Jan. 5, 1995.

Senior forward Tai Dotson also reached double figures in the win, scoring ten points to go along with four rebounds.

Senior guard Kendra Elam added nine points, freshman forward Margaret Wuebker had eight points, five rebounds and five steals while senior guard Laura Piehl chipped in six points, four rebounds and a pair of steals in the win.

Sophomore forward Lacey Kessler only scored two points, but had five steals.

The Oilers, who improved to 10-3 on the year with a 7-2 record in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), shot 39.7 percent (25-of-63) from the floor and dished out 20 assists in the game as junior guard Ashley Andrews contributed a season-high seven helpers.  The Oilers also forced 39 turnovers and held the Panthers to a 35 percent (14-of-40) shooting clip.

Melissa Scherpenberg led the Panthers with 12 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks.

The Oilers will be back out on the court again on Saturday when they host Tiffin University.  The league contest is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. in Croy Gymnasium.
