Oilers Head to Walsh, Host Malone this Week

The Oilers women's basketball team will have two Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) games this week.  The Oilers will hit the road to face Walsh University on Thursday at 8 p.m. before returning home to take on Malone University at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

The Series

The Oilers hold a 9-2 advantage in the all-time series against the Cavaliers dating back to the 1983-84 season when Findlay came away with a 69-66 win in the NAIA District 22 playoffs.

The two programs have not met on the hardwood since the 1996-97 campaign, a game in which the Oilers came out victorious by a score of 88-77.

Jill Muhlenkamp led the charge with 18 points and 12 rebounds in the victory.

The Oilers have won the last eight meetings between the two schools.

The Oilers have never lost to Malone as they sport a 17-0 record against the Pioneers dating back to the 1991-92 campaign when Findlay won by a score of 77-43.

Last season the Oilers came away with a 74-49 victory against the Pioneers behind 17 points, nine rebounds and four steals from Kayla Brown.

The Oilers, who registered 16 steals in the win, scored 32 points off of turnovers and held a 30-13 advantage in points off the bench.

Clare Aubry also reached double figures with 14 points while Ashley Andrews and Tai Dotson recorded eight points apiece off the bench.

The University of Findlay

The University of Findlay women's basketball team came away with a 79-48 win over Lake Erie College on Saturday, Jan. 19 in Painesville, Ohio.

The Oilers dominated from beginning to end as they shot 48.9 percent (23-of-47) from the floor and held the Storm to a mere 31.9 percent (15-of-47) shooting clip.  Findlay also forced 26 turnovers and registered 12 steals in the win.

Kayla Brown and Tai Dotson led the way as they each scored 17 points in the victory.  Brown, who moved into 17th place on Findlay's all-time scoring list during the game, hit 6-of-10 shots from the field and now has accumulated 1,041 points during her tenure with the program.

Dotson meanwhile hit 5-of-6 attempts from the field and canned 7-of-9 shot attempts from the charity stripe while also adding five boards in the game.

Karli Beasley added ten points as 12 Findlay players scored.

Walsh University

The Cavaliers are 6-9 on the year with a 3-8 record in the GLIAC.  Tracy Payne leads the team and is averaging 13.5 points per game.

Malone University

The Pioneers are currently 9-7 on the year with a 5-7 record in conference play.  Deborah Simmers is averaging 12.1 points per game while Logan Pastor is clicking for 10.4 points and 7.9 rebounds per outing.

1,000-Point Club

Senior forward Kayla Brown became the 19th member of the Oilers 1,000-point club in the Oilers 67-37 win over Ohio Dominican on Jan. 10 in Croy Gymnasium.

Brown currently ranks 17th all-time with 1,041 career points and has also added 373 rebounds and 164 steals during her tenure with the program.

Brown is currently chasing Michelle Vorst, who scored 1,046 points from 2003-06, for 16th place on the scoring list.

Teammate Laura Piehl is also a member of the Oilers 1,000-point club and has racked up 1,287 career points, which ranks seventh all-time at Findlay.

Piehl has also recorded 457 rebounds, 277 assists and 119 steals during her time with the Oilers.

Piehl is chasing Janet Schilling for sixth place all-time on the Oilers scoring list.  Schilling racked up 1,294 career points from 1983-86.

Lighting Up the Scoreboard

Senior forward Kayla Brown has been scoring in bunches this season, averaging 18.2 points per game.  Her points per game average is the third best in the GLIAC and is enabling Findlay to average 71.4 points per outing, the third best mark in the league.

Nationally, Brown ranks 32nd in points per game average.

Grand Theft

The Oilers are averaging 13.2 steals per game, the best total in the GLIAC and the 14th best mark in the nation. 

Individually, senior forward Kayla Brown ranks first in the GLIAC with 2.8 steals per game while sophomore forward Lacey Kessler is 12th with 1.8 steals per contest.

Forcing Turnovers

The Oilers are forcing 23.9 turnovers per game, the best total in the GLIAC.

They also have a +5.3 advantage in turnover margin, the 23rd best mark in the nation.

Triple Your Pleasure

Senior forward Kayla Brown ranks second in the conference in three point shooting, making 2.3 per game.  She has connected on 36.7 percent (36-of-98) of her attempts thus far, which ranks 11th in the GLIAC.

The Oilers are hitting 31.1 percent of their triple tries this season, the seventh best mark in the league.

Shooting Range

The Oilers rank sixth in the GLIAC in field goal percentage, hitting 41.2 percent of their attempts.

Senior forwards Kayla Brown (50.5%) and Tai Dotson (50.4%) rank ninth and tenth, respectively, in the GLIAC.

Freebies

The Oilers have made 287 free throws this season, the second best mark in the GLIAC.  They are hitting 71.6 percent of their attempts, which is the seventh best mark in the conference.

Dropping Dimes

The Oilers rank fourth in the GLIAC in assists per game with 14.1 per game.

Stealing Records

The Oilers set a new school record with 28 steals in their 67-37 win over Ohio Dominican on Jan. 10.  The previous record of 27 was set in a 75-57 victory over Walsh on Jan. 5, 1995. 

Reaching the 90-Point Plateau

The Oilers have scored 90 or more points 63 times since the 1978-79 season and sport a 62-1 (.984) record in those games.

Their only loss came at the hands of Wilmington, who defeated the Oilers by a score of 110-98 in 1985.

Preseason GLIAC Poll

The University of Findlay women's basketball team was picked to finish third in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) South Division as the league office announced their annual preseason poll on Wednesday, Oct. 31.

The Oilers, who finished last season with a 15-12 record, received 121 votes in the poll and trailed Tiffin University (140) and Ashland University (184) in the South Division.  The Eagles received all 23 first place votes in the poll, which was based on votes by members of the media.

Ferris State University was tabbed as the favorite to win the North Division after receiving 15 first place votes and a total of 174 votes overall.

Preseason All-GLIAC

Senior forward Kayla Brown was honored as a preseason first team all-conference pick.

Brown earned second team honors last year as a junior after averaging a team-high 12.7 points and 5.1 rebounds per game.  She also recorded 2.2 steals per game and drained 46 three pointers. 

Brown has scored 754 points during her career and has added 317 rebounds.  She will look to become the Oilers 19th member of the 1,000-point club in her final year with the program.

Winning GLIAC South Division Titles

The Oilers have won two out the last three GLIAC South Division titles (2009-10, 2010-11) and as a program, have captured championships in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2010 and 2011.

GLIAC Tournament

The Oilers have appeared in the GLIAC Tournament four times in their history.  During the 2009-10 campaign, the Oilers won a GLIAC Tournament game for the first time in school history, defeating Hillsdale College 66-62 to advance to the second round.
