#25 Oilers Host Walsh then Travel to Malone

The Oilers women's basketball team, ranked 25th nationally, will host Walsh University on Thursday before traveling to Canton, Ohio to take on Malone University this Saturday.  The Oilers will play the Cavaliers at 8 p.m. in Croy Gymnasium and tip at 3 p.m. against the Pioneers on Saturday.

The Series

The Oilers hold a 10-2 advantage in the all-time series against the Cavaliers dating back to the 1983-84 season when Findlay came away with a 69-66 win in the NAIA District 22 playoffs.

The Oilers claimed a 68-64 win over Walsh on Jan. 24 in North Canton, Ohio as Tai Dotson scored a career-high 20 points, making 10-of-11 shots from the field.

Kayla Brown added 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting while Kaleigh Kenny had a career-high 12 points and a season-high eight rebounds off the bench.

The Oilers shot 46.6 percent (27-of-58) from the field and grabbed 17 offensive rebounds in the win.  The second chance opportunities led to 20 points for the Oilers.

Walsh shot 41.1 percent (23-of-56) from the floor and received 20 points and nine boards from Maggie Berry in the game.

The Oilers have never lost to Malone as they sport an 18-0 record against the Pioneers dating back to the 1991-92 campaign when Findlay won by a score of 77-43.

Findlay won the first meeting between the two programs this season by a score of 67-55 on Jan. 26 in Croy Gymnasium.

Kayla Brown led the team with 14 points on 5-of-12 shooting.  She also tied a career-high with six steals and added three rebounds and three assists.

Karli Beasley added nine points while Kaleigh Kenny and Tai Dotson scored eight points apiece.

Laura Piehl and Alyssa Grevenkamp came off the bench to score seven points apiece while Ashley Andrews had seven points, four steals, three assists and a pair of rebounds.

The Pioneers, who shot 44 percent (22-of-50) from the floor, were led by Sydnee Penn's 16 points.

The University of Findlay

The Oilers crushed Lake Erie College by a score of 75-37 on Saturday, Feb. 16 in Croy Gymnasium. 

The Oilers, who have now won eight straight games, forced 32 turnovers and came away with 18 steals in the game.  They held a 40-19 advantage in points off of turnovers and registered a 42-12 advantage in scoring off the bench.

Findlay shot 42.9 percent (24-of-56) from the floor and out-rebounded the Storm by a 46-31 margin.  They also canned 20-of-27 (74.1%) shot attempts from the free throw line and held Lake Erie to a dismal 27.5 percent (14-of-51) shooting clip.

Margaret Wuebker led the team with a career-high 12 points on 3-of-4 shooting.  She also tallied six rebounds and connected on 6-of-8 attempts from the free throw line in the win.

Kayla Brown also reached double figures with ten points while Lacey Kessler had nine points, three rebounds, two steals, two assists and one block in 13 minutes off the bench.

Kelsey Lewis contributed eight points and a career-high seven rebounds while Kristin Klausing scored a season-high eight points in the game.

The Cavaliers are 7-15 on the year with a 4-14 record in conference play.  Tracy Payne has led the team with a 13.5 points per game average while Maggie Berry is contributing 10.5 points and 5.6 rebounds per outing.

Malone University

The Pioneers are 13-10 on the season with a 9-10 record in the GLIAC.  Deborah Simmers is their leading scorer at 13.1 points per game.  Logan Pastor and Sydnee Penn are chipping in 9.3 points per game apiece as well.

1,000-Point Club

Senior forward Kayla Brown became the 19th member of the Oilers 1,000-point club in the Oilers 67-37 win over Ohio Dominican on Jan. 10 in Croy Gymnasium.

Brown currently ranks 12th all-time with 1,143 career points and has also added 396 rebounds and 178 steals during her tenure with the program.

Brown is currently chasing Tammy Lorton, who scored 1,195 points from 1989-92, for 11th place on the scoring list.

Teammate Laura Piehl is also a member of the Oilers 1,000-point club and has racked up 1,323 career points, which ranks sixth all-time at Findlay.

Piehl has also recorded 480 rebounds, 284 assists and 126 steals during her time with the Oilers.

Piehl is chasing Nicole Clever for fifth place all-time on the Oilers scoring list.  Clever racked up 1,331 career points from 1993-95.

Nationally Ranked

The Oilers are ranked 25th in the nation, the first time they have ever cracked the top-25 at the NCAA Division II level.

Lighting Up the Scoreboard

Senior forward Kayla Brown has been scoring in bunches this season, averaging 17.1 points per game.  Her points per game average is the fourth best in the GLIAC and is enabling Findlay to average 70.2 points per outing, the third best mark in the league.

Grand Theft

The Oilers are averaging 12.9 steals per game, the best total in the GLIAC and the 13th best mark in the nation. 

Individually, senior forward Kayla Brown ranks second in the GLIAC with 2.5 steals per game while sophomore forward Lacey Kessler is 15th with 1.6 steals per contest.

Forcing Turnovers

The Oilers are forcing 23.8 turnovers per game, the best total in the GLIAC. They also have a +5.8 advantage in turnover margin, the 18th best mark in the nation.

Triple Your Pleasure

Senior forward Kayla Brown ranks third in the conference in three point shooting, making 2.0 per game.  She has connected on 35.9 percent (47-of-131) of her attempts thus far, which ranks 12th in the GLIAC.

The Oilers are hitting 31.0 percent of their triple tries this season, the seventh best mark in the league.  They have also splashed down 133 triples on the year, which ranks third in the GLIAC.

Shooting Range

The Oilers rank third in the GLIAC in field goal percentage, hitting 41.5 percent of their attempts.

Senior forwards Tai Dotson (52.7%) and Kayla Brown (49.8%) rank fifth and tenth, respectively, in the GLIAC.

Freebies

The Oilers have made 391 free throws this season, the second best mark in the GLIAC. 

Dropping Dimes

The Oilers rank third in the GLIAC in assists per game with 14.0 per game.

Defense Wins Championships

The Oilers are ranked third in the GLIAC in points allowed, surrendering only 57.7 points per game to their opposition.

Moving on Up

Senior forward Kayla Brown has drained 121 three pointers in her career, the fifth best total ever at Findlay.  She is currently chasing Tiffany Stewart for fourth place, who drained 142 triples from 2000-03.

The Mt. Blanchard, Ohio native is also ranked fifth all-time in career three point attempts with 333.  She trails Stewart for fourth place, who attempted 384 triples.

The Great Heist

Senior forward Kayla Brown ranks sixth all-time at Findlay in steals with 178.  She trails Nicole Clever in the all-time rankings, who came away with 203 steals from 1993-95.

GLIAC South Division Player of the Week

Senior forward Kayla Brown was named the GLIAC South Division Player of the Week on Tuesday, Feb. 4.

Brown led the Oilers to a 76-70 win at Hillsdale on Feb. 2 with 22 points on 8-of-17 shooting.  The Mt. Blanchard, Ohio native canned 4-of-9 three point attempts and also added four rebounds and a pair of steals.

Stealing Records

The Oilers set a new school record with 28 steals in their 67-37 win over Ohio Dominican on Jan. 10.  The previous record of 27 was set in a 75-57 victory over Walsh on Jan. 5, 1995. 

Reaching the 90-Point Plateau

The Oilers have scored 90 or more points 63 times since the 1978-79 season and sport a 62-1 (.984) record in those games.

Their only loss came at the hands of Wilmington, who defeated the Oilers by a score of 110-98 in 1985.

Preseason GLIAC Poll

The University of Findlay women's basketball team was picked to finish third in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) South Division as the league office announced their annual preseason poll on Wednesday, Oct. 31.

The Oilers, who finished last season with a 15-12 record, received 121 votes in the poll and trailed Tiffin University (140) and Ashland University (184) in the South Division.  The Eagles received all 23 first place votes in the poll, which was based on votes by members of the media.

Ferris State University was tabbed as the favorite to win the North Division after receiving 15 first place votes and a total of 174 votes overall.

Preseason All-GLIAC

Senior forward Kayla Brown was honored as a preseason first team all-conference pick.

Brown earned second team honors last year as a junior after averaging a team-high 12.7 points and 5.1 rebounds per game.  She also recorded 2.2 steals per game and drained 46 three pointers. 

Winning GLIAC South Division Titles

The Oilers have won two out the last three GLIAC South Division titles (2009-10, 2010-11) and as a program, have captured championships in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2010 and 2011.

GLIAC Tournament

The Oilers have appeared in the GLIAC Tournament four times in their history.  During the 2009-10 campaign, the Oilers won a GLIAC Tournament game for the first time in school history, defeating Hillsdale College 66-62 to advance to the second round.
