Women's Basketball to Host ODU and Tiffin

The University of Findlay women's basketball team will be at home for two more games this week against Ohio Dominican University and Tiffin University.  The Oilers and Panthers will play at 6 p.m. on Thursday before the Dragons come to town for a 1 p.m. game on Saturday.

Series Information

The Oilers hold a 14-3 advantage in the all-time series against Ohio Dominican dating back to the 1991-92 campaign when the Panthers claimed a 77-69 victory over Findlay in the NAIA District 22 playoffs.

Earlier this season, the Panthers defeated the Oilers by a score of 79-72 in overtime on  Jan. 16 in Columbus, Ohio.

The Oilers shot only 32.0 percent (24-of-75) from the floor and were out-rebounded by a 56-31 margin.  The team did force 28 turnovers and recorded 19 steals in the loss.

Ciara Geiger had her best game in a Findlay uniform, hitting 9-of-14 shot attempts en route to a team-high 27 points.  She also added four rebounds, three steals and two assists in the game.

Margaret Wuebker and Karli Bonar also reached double figures in the loss, contributing 14 and 11 points, respectively. 

Nikki Gunning and junior forward Lacey Kessler added seven points apiece while Ashley Andrews registered a career-high eight steals.

The Oilers hold a commanding 39-8 advantage in the all-time series against the Dragons dating back to the 1984-85 campaign when Findlay was victorious by a score of 77-36.

Findlay defeated Tiffin by a score of 69-66 earlier this season in Tiffin behind 14 points from Margaret Wuebker.  She also added nine rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks while Karli Bonar contributed 11 points, eight assists and drained 3-of-7 three point attempts.

Ciara Geiger had 11 points, seven rebounds, two assists and four steals in the victory.

Nikki Gunning contributed 12 points and two steals off the bench while Kristin Klausing dished out seven assists to go along with five points and two steals in the contest.

Findlay shot 45.9 percent (28-of-61) from the floor while the Dragons connected on 40 percent (20-of-50) of their attempts.

Findlay

The University of Findlay women's basketball let one slip away on Monday evening in Croy Gymnasium as they fell 66-61 to Hillsdale College.

Findlay shot 35 percent (21-of-60) from the floor while the Chargers connected on 48.9 percent (23-of-47) of their shot attempts.  The Oilers did force 27 turnovers and came away with 12 steals in the game while the Chargers held a 40-33 advantage on the boards.

Ciara Geiger led the Oilers with 13 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals while Margaret Wuebker turned in ten points, four rebounds, three steals and two assists in only 18 minutes of action due to foul trouble.

Kelsey Lewis had a good game for Findlay off the bench, scoring nine points to go along with five rebounds.

Nikki Gunning chipped in seven points while Kaleigh Kenny registered six points and four boards in the loss.

Ohio Dominican

The Panthers are 8-11 on the year with a 5-10 record in conference play.  They are coming off of a 75-56 win over Tiffin on Monday.

Kacee Hockenberry leads the team and is averaging 16.7 points per game.

Melissa Scherpenberg is also having a good season for Ohio Dominican and is posting averages of 9.5 points, 10.2 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game.

Madi Rittinger is chipping in 8.3 points and 5.3 rebounds per contest as well.

Tiffin

The Dragons are 6-12 on the year with a 3-11 record in GLIAC play.

Karli Mast leads the team and is averaging 10.5 points per game.

Bre Nauman (9.6), Jillian Adams (8.4), Katie Miller (8.0), Deidre McKay (7.5) and Jordan Fraley (7.1) are all averaging over 7.0 points per game for the Dragons.

Grand Theft

The Oilers are averaging 12.6 steals per game this season, the best mark in the GLIAC and the eighth highest total in the nation.  They also are also ranked second in the league by forcing their opponent into 22.9 turnovers per contest.

Individually, senior guard Ashley Andrews is ranked second in the conference in steals per game with 2.2 per contest while freshman guard Karli Bonar ranks eighth with a 1.8 steals per game average.

Junior guard Ciara Geiger (1.6), junior forward Lacey Kessler (1.5), senior guard Karli Beasley (1.3), junior guard Nikki Gunning (1.1) and sophomore forward Margaret Wuebker (1.1) are also averaging at least one steal per contest for the Oilers this season.

Making Shots

Sophomore forward Margaret Wuebker ranks ninth in the league in shooting percentage as she is connecting on 51.2 percent of her attempts from the field this season.

Balanced Scoring

The Oilers are averaging 69.4 points per game, the 11th best total in the GLIAC.  They are doing so with a balanced scoring attack, which features seven players averaging 5.0 points per contest or more.

Sophomore forward Margaret Wuebker leads the team with a scoring average of 12.8 points per game while junior guard Ciara Geiger is providing 9.3 points per contest.

Taking Care of the Ball

The Oilers are only turning the ball over 15.6 times per game, which is the sixth best mark in the GLIAC.

The Oilers also hold a +7.3 advantage in the turnover column, the best total in the league and the fourth best mark in the nation.

Raining 3's

The Oilers also connecting on 6.9 three pointers per game, which is the second highest mark in the conference. 

Freshman guard Karli Bonar is connecting on 2.2 triple tries per game this year, which is the sixth highest total in the GLIAC. 

Bonar set Ohio state records for most three pointers made in a season (110) and most made triples in a career (350) during her time at Shadyside High School.

In the Oilers 87-54 win over Northwestern Ohio on Nov. 30, the Oilers canned a season-high 15 three pointers and attempted a school record 42 triple tries.

Swatting Shots

Sophomore forward Margaret Wuebker ranks 13th in the GLIAC in blocked shots per game at 0.8 swats per contest.  Teammate Kelsey Lewis, also a sophomore forward, is right behind her with 0.7 blocks per contest.

Passing the Rock

The Oilers are fourth in the conference in assists per game with 14.1 per contest.  Junior guard Kristin Klausing is dishing out 2.6 assists per contest to lead the team while senior guard Ashley Andrews ranks second on the squad with 2.4 dimes per game.

Getting Buckets

Junior guard Ciara Geiger has proven she has the ability to fill up the basket.  Geiger is in her first season with the Oilers after transferring from Urbana University, where she scored 995 points in her first two collegiate seasons.  The Ft. Wayne, Ind. native has now racked up 1,172 career points in her collegiate career.

Reaching the 90-Point Plateau

The Oilers have scored 90 or more points 64 times since the 1978-79 season and sport a 63-1 (.984) record in those games.  Their only loss came at the hands of Wilmington, who defeated the Oilers by a score of 110-98 in 1985.

GLIAC Tournament

The Oilers have appeared in the GLIAC Tournament five times in their history.  They sport a 3-5 record in tournament play.

Winning GLIAC South Division Titles

The Oilers have won two out the last four GLIAC South Division titles (2009-10, 2010-11) and as a program, have captured championships in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2010 and 2011.

Preseason GLIAC Poll

The Oilers were picked to finish second in the South Division of the GLIAC this season according to the annual preseason poll, which was released on Nov. 7.

The Oilers received a total of 177 votes and ten first place votes in the poll.  They fell one vote shy of the top spot in the division, which is held by Ashland University with 178 votes.  The Eagles also received 13 first place votes and are the defending NCAA Division II National Champions.

Findlay finished the 2012-13 campaign with a 24-6 record.  They were ranked 20th in the nation in the final poll and reached the NCAA Division II National Tournament for only the second time in school history.

Preseason All-GLIAC

Junior guard Ciara Geiger, a transfer from Urbana University, and sophomore forward Margaret Wuebker each were honored on the preseason all-conference squads.  Geiger was voted first team all-conference while Wuebker earned a spot on the second team.

Geiger earned all-region honors last year for the Blue Knights after averaging 18.4 points per game.  The Great Midwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year racked up a total of 995 points during her two years with Urbana and will be counted on to provide offensive firepower for the Oilers this season.

Wuebker made 26 starts for the Oilers last season as a true freshman, averaging 5.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game.
