Oilers Head to Walsh, Host Malone for Senior Day

The University of Findlay women's basketball team will have two games this week against Walsh University and Malone University.  The Oilers will travel to Canton, Ohio to take on Walsh this Thursday at 5:30 p.m. before returning home to host Malone on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Black Out

The Oilers are calling for a "Black Out" of Croy Gymnasium on Saturday for senior day. Please come dressed in black to show support for the basketball teams. Both the men and women's teams will also be wearing their black uniforms on Saturday as well.

Chili Cook-Off

The 2014 Cancer Patient Services Chili Cook-Off will be held after the Oilers men's basketball game on Saturday in the Koehler Fitness and Recreation Complex.  The event will run from 4:45 p.m. on Feb. 22 and will end around 8 p.m.  Make sure and stop over after the game to support a great cause and eat some fabulous chili.

Series Information

The Oilers hold a 12-2 advantage in the all-time series against the Cavaliers dating back to the 1983-84 season when Findlay came away with a 69-66 win in the NAIA District 22 playoffs.

Findlay came away with a 56-51 win over Walsh on Jan. 30 in Croy Gymnasium behind 16 points from Ciara Geiger, who made 7-of-11 shot attempts in the game.  She also added five rebounds, three assists and three steals in the win.

Margaret Wuebker also reached double figures with 12 points to go along with seven rebounds while Karli Bonar had nine points, six steals and five rebounds.

The Oilers shot only 36.7 percent (18-of-49) from the floor in the game, but forced 26 Cavalier turnovers.  Findlay also held Walsh to a mere 30 percent (18-of-60) shooting clip in the game.

The Oilers hold a commanding 19-1 record against the Pioneers in their all-time series dating back to the 1991-92 campaign when Findlay won by a score of 77-43.

Findlay fell 71-65 against Malone earlier this season on Feb. 1 in Canton, Ohio.

The Oilers could only muster a 31.7 percent (19-of-60) shooting clip in the game as Ciara Geiger led the way with 17 points, four rebounds, three assists, one steal and one block.

Margaret Wuebker also reached double figures with 12 points while Karli Bonar had nine points.

Kelsey Lewis contributed six points and three rebounds for Findlay as well.

The Pioneers shot 40.7 percent (24-of-59) from the field and were led by Sydnee Penn, who stuffed the stat sheet with 17 points, six rebounds, five assists and four steals.

Findlay

The Oilers defeated Lake Erie College by a score of 85-68 on Saturday, Feb. 15 in Painesville, Ohio. 

Karli Beasley led the way as she poured in a career-high 22 points on 7-of-10 shooting.

Beasley made a career-high four three pointers in the game and also stuffed the stat sheet with four assists, four steals, three rebounds and a block in 30 minutes of playing time.

Karli Bonar added 14 points, four rebounds and three assists while Nikki Gunning also reached double figures with ten points to go along with three steals and two boards.

Margaret Wuebker, Ciara Geiger and Lacey Kessler all chipped in eight points during the victory as well for Findlay.

The Oilers shot 45.6 percent (26-of-57) from the floor and canned 11-of-30 (36.7%) shot attempts from behind the three point line.  Findlay also forced 27 turnovers and came away with 17 steals in the game.

The Storm shot 43.9 percent (25-of-57) from the floor and were led by Chrissy Delaney's 22 points and eight rebounds.

Walsh

The Cavaliers are 9-15 on the season with a 5-13 record in conference play.  Kelsey Funderburgh is leading the team and sports averages of 15.1 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game.

Tara Gallupe is averaging 13.0 points and 5.7 rebounds per game while Jalynn Graham is chipping in 12.2 points and 5.8 rebounds per contest.

Malone

The Pioneers are 17-8 on the year with a 12-7 record in GLIAC play. 

Malone features a balanced scoring attack led by Sydnee Penn and Selana Reale, who are scoring 12.8 points per game, respectively.

Deborah Simmers is also scoring in double figures at 11.8 points per night.

Grand Theft

The Oilers are averaging 12.7 steals per game this season, the best mark in the GLIAC and the seventh highest total in the nation.  They also are also ranked second in the league by forcing their opponent into 22.8 turnovers per contest.

Individually, senior guard Ashley Andrews is ranked fifth in the conference in steals per game with 2.0 per contest while freshman guard Karli Bonar ranks eighth with a 1.7 steals per game average.

Junior guard Ciara Geiger (1.6), junior forward Lacey Kessler (1.4), senior guard Karli Beasley (1.3), junior guard Nikki Gunning (1.3), sophomore forward Margaret Wuebker (1.1) and junior guard Kristin Klausing (1.0) are also averaging at least one steal per contest for the Oilers this season.

Making Shots

Sophomore forward Margaret Wuebker ranks eighth in the league in shooting percentage as she is connecting on 52.4 percent of her attempts from the field this season.

Balanced Scoring

The Oilers are averaging 70.3 points per game, the tenth best total in the GLIAC.  They are doing so with a balanced scoring attack, which features seven players averaging 5.0 points per contest or more.

Sophomore forward Margaret Wuebker leads the team with a scoring average of 12.9 points per game while junior guard Ciara Geiger is providing 9.8 points per contest.

Taking Care of the Ball

The Oilers are only turning the ball over 16.0 times per game, which is the seventh best mark in the GLIAC.

The Oilers also hold a +6.6 advantage in the turnover column, the best total in the league and the seventh best mark in the nation.

Raining 3's

The Oilers also connecting on 7.2 three pointers per game, which is the third highest mark in the conference. 

Freshman guard Karli Bonar is connecting on 2.2 triple tries per game this year, which is the fifth highest total in the GLIAC. 

Bonar set Ohio state records for most three pointers made in a season (110) and most made triples in a career (350) during her time at Shadyside High School.

In the Oilers 87-54 win over Northwestern Ohio on Nov. 30, the Oilers canned a season-high 15 three pointers and attempted a school record 42 triple tries.

Swatting Shots

Sophomore forward Margaret Wuebker ranks 14th in the GLIAC in blocked shots per game at 0.9 swats per contest.  Teammate Kelsey Lewis, also a sophomore forward, is right behind her with 0.7 blocks per contest.

Passing the Rock

The Oilers are third in the conference in assists per game with 14.5 per contest.  Junior guard Kristin Klausing is dishing out 2.7 assists per contest to lead the team while senior guard Ashley Andrews ranks second on the squad with 2.5 dimes per game.

Getting Buckets

Junior guard Ciara Geiger has proven she has the ability to fill up the basket.  Geiger is in her first season with the Oilers after transferring from Urbana University, where she scored 995 points in her first two collegiate seasons.  The Ft. Wayne, Ind. native has now racked up 1,221 career points in her collegiate career.

A Record-Setting Performance

Sophomore forward Kelsey Lewis tied a school record by going 8-of-8 from the field in the Oilers 81-59 win over Tiffin on Feb. 8.  Lewis finished the game with a career-high 20 points and is now tied with Brittany Wells for the most made shots in a game without a miss.  Wells went 8-of-8 from the field in a 76-55 win against Siena Heights on Nov. 29, 2005.

Reaching the 90-Point Plateau

The Oilers have scored 90 or more points 64 times since the 1978-79 season and sport a 63-1 (.984) record in those games.  Their only loss came at the hands of Wilmington, who defeated the Oilers by a score of 110-98 in 1985.

GLIAC Tournament

The Oilers have appeared in the GLIAC Tournament five times in their history.  They sport a 3-5 record in tournament play.

Winning GLIAC South Division Titles

The Oilers have won two out the last four GLIAC South Division titles (2009-10, 2010-11) and as a program, have captured championships in 1998, 1999, 2000, 2010 and 2011.

Preseason GLIAC Poll

The Oilers were picked to finish second in the South Division of the GLIAC this season according to the annual preseason poll, which was released on Nov. 7.

The Oilers received a total of 177 votes and ten first place votes in the poll.  They fell one vote shy of the top spot in the division, which is held by Ashland University with 178 votes.  The Eagles also received 13 first place votes and are the defending NCAA Division II National Champions.

Findlay finished the 2012-13 campaign with a 24-6 record.  They were ranked 20th in the nation in the final poll and reached the NCAA Division II National Tournament for only the second time in school history.

Preseason All-GLIAC

Junior guard Ciara Geiger, a transfer from Urbana University, and sophomore forward Margaret Wuebker each were honored on the preseason all-conference squads.  Geiger was voted first team all-conference while Wuebker earned a spot on the second team.

Geiger earned all-region honors last year for the Blue Knights after averaging 18.4 points per game.  The Great Midwest Athletic Conference Player of the Year racked up a total of 995 points during her two years with Urbana and will be counted on to provide offensive firepower for the Oilers this season.

Wuebker made 26 starts for the Oilers last season as a true freshman, averaging 5.5 points and 4.0 rebounds per game.
